The Author describes his interviews and contacts with people ( Men and women) working in the illegal underground economy of drugs and prostitution in New York. In the end one not only understands their motivation but also that this economy which we see as 'crime' and a nuisance from the perspective of our legal economy/lifestyle is their means to earn a living for themself and the persons which depend on them and to prosper in life.
When you read this book you'll understand what it means to the human beings living in the favelas in Rio when Police invades their neighbourhood and tries to destroy their underground economy: No food for children, no medical treatment for the sick and no schooling for the next generation i.e. no hope to escape the miserable conditions ever.
