A love story with bite …...

Walking home after a night out drowning her sorrows with her best friend, Carrie, Alexandra Jones stupidly takes a phone call from her cheating ex-boyfriend, Eddie, and in her anger hurls her phone into the forest before her.

But when Alex goes to retrieve her phone from the undergrowth, she and Carrie come face-to-face with a monster they never even knew existed, a Vârcolac (a nightmarish vampire-werewolf hybrid) and he's in search of fresh blood. The next thing Alex knows, she is staring at the impossibly handsome but mysterious Nathan who has helped bring her back to life, but not to the life she left.

To her horror, she discovers she has now become a blood-drinking Vârcolac herself and she is the only female of her kind, with the potential for breeding a whole new army of Vârcolacs if they can only track her down and press her into service.

And while Alex gets to know Nathan and his shape-shifting family as they offer her the protection she so desperately needs, unbeknown to all of them, the Vârcolacs are getting closer …

I thoroughly enjoyed First Bitten, it has such originality to it. It stands well apart from your usual paranormal romance books. Not your typical vampire/werewolf novel at all. It's well-crafted and beautifully written, and it takes you to places you just don't expect. Just when you think you know what's about to happen ... bam! the story leads you off in a completely different and unexpected direction. It's a must for any fan of paranormal romances, or readers who are looking for a little something different from the norm.

This story is not a revolution in the genre of vampire, werewolf and supernatural creatures. I enjoyed it as a short and entertaining read. Sometimes the plot is foreseeable and the characters seem a little bit shallow, but it's an interesting mixture of different creatures, which adds some sugar on the overflowing sector of vampire stories. It's like Jacob from Twilight meeting a newborn, innocent and female hybrid like Klaus from the Vampire Diaries fighting against Originals and falling in love. You have everything in there- plus some loss, desire and drama.
So if you're an adult reader, who desires to have a mystery love story, which is easy to read and doesn't demand too much attention from the reader, you should give it a try.
Page numbers for the Kindle version would have been very welcomed though.

Have you noticed how when you're down, life bends you over and shoves its heel in your rear end just to make sure you're breathing in sand? Just when it can't get any worse, it does.

First Bitten takes you straight into the mire with Alex. Then the mystery starts. Memory gaps, strange men, and well - wow - did I laugh a lot being Alex's voyeur. A pure man of mystery saved Alex the night it all turned to carnage, but wasn't in time to save Carrie. Nothing cuts as deep as grief and guilt in one potent cocktail.

The grief is so immediate and heart-wrenching, you feel it. Samantha Towle's writing drags you right into the thick of it, emotions and all, and you are drawn and repulsed by this tale - both hooks so deep you just can't stop reading.

There is such beauty in this novel, many lines stuck out and made me pause to appreciate the artistic beauty of certain sentences (gorgeous metaphors) - but then the sexual tension sinks fangs into you, and you are swept along to the Original hell, fearing for Alex, wanting her hero to save her, only to be gripped by conflict and tension all over again.

The ending - god what an ending! It's so emotional I think I spiraled for awhile, unwilling to let it go. As a reader, hooked from the first chapter, I'm prepared to send death threats to get a sequel to this novel. There MUST be more, I need more!

This is more than romance, it's more than paranormal, it's part thriller, part mystery - and it's such an incredible tale you will want a Nathan of your own.

Awesome awesome read! She proves she can do it! I was astounded by her first novel and am so delighted her writing in this is just as original, gripping, emotive and compelling! You have to read this one! Definitely 5 out of 5 stars!

I liked the cover and initially thought oh its going to be a vampire novel, Oh Wow! I knew it would be good as I read Samantha's other book The Bringer and I loved that one. This book was much much more than a vampire story. Alex is bitten by a Várcolac, which is a vampire-werewolf hybrid.....the thing is women don't usually survive.....well....Alex does! Which means that she is very valuable to the Varcolac who obviously wish to reproduce! Alex was "Lucky" to be rescued by the gorgeous *swoon* Nathan. Nathan, his father Jack and younger brother Sol *swoons more for Sol* nurse her back to health and offer her protection.
Alex has lots of things to over come such as the fact her best friend/more like a sister Carrie was killed by the Várcolac , Alex also has to come to terms with the fact she can never return to her family or friends again, as she would put them in danger with the Várcolacs. alex also has to learn to accept certain traits and "talents" she now has such as she has to drink blood......sure its animal blood that the gorgeous Nathan brings her regularly but its still blood! Alex also has improved hearing, sight and strength too. Alex also finds her self attracted to Nathan, even though he seems to resent her presence and at times hate her too, even though he is the one that saved her. Alex also knows that there is something different about Jack, Nathan, and Sol, it turns out that they are shifters.
I really don't want to go into the plot and spoil the book for anyone but I will say that Alex ends up being sold out to the enemy which causes another great loss of life to happen just when she is beginning to believe that she can cope and live with what life has thrown at her.
I picked my kindle up with this book on and put it down for 10 minutes to eat tea, then went to bed later still reading it, I truthfully did not, could not put it down. This book made me gasp in shock, sit on the end of my seat with suspense, tears well up and my heart ache for certain characters and what happens to them. The book is wonderfully written you can imagine the scenery as well as the gorgeous shape-shifter family too *phwoar*
I felt these books were easily, easily on a par if not better than the Women of The Otherworld Series by Kelley Armstrong, The Shifter Series by Rachel Vincent, and The Resurrection Series by Dee Tenorio too.
So did I enjoy it? Yes Would I read more in the series? Oh Yes! can't wait!! Would I recommend them? Definitely. Must, Must read!

For the most part this was a fun, easy read. I enjoyed the premise a lot; I'm looking forward to the sequels because it seems like this has the potential to get pretty epic in scope and scenery. I'm entranced by the world First Bitten is set in - werewolves in the US military, serving in Iraq? Shapeshifters down on the farm? The Originals, the Vampires, the Werewolves...you have the ingredients for a breathtaking setting. I hope we get to see more of it the next book!

As for the characters, they tend to be believable, but the problem is they're not always likable. Nathan tends to drive me crazy; the author tries to pin his inconsistency on his military background, but he honestly just seems like a jerk. This makes the attraction and particularly the sex scene at the end a bit unbelievable and forced. Alex is very believable - her grief particularly reads very genuinely - but not always fun to read; her voice gets a little inconsistent sometimes as she talks and switches between the action and the thoughts in her head. There was a short chapter from Nathan's point of view too, but it was such a brief interlude that it was distracting - 90% of the novel is from Alex's pov but that little bit from Nathan startled me and I had to stop to think and realize who was speaking.

The plot was enjoyable, but it also felt bottom heavy. Most of the novel focused on Alex not even learning to live with what she is, but learning to live with grief - then the climax of the novel exploded without much buildup to it. I would have loved to have read more about the fight, more about the backstory, more - just more! Alexandra Jones is going to be a fun author to read, but I think this would have been a better book if it was long enough to tell the whole story.
