Fine Cooking's cakes & cupcakes recipes is a delicious and beautiful book full of achievable recipes by the home cook. The ingredients are listed in metric or American. Since the book doesn't have an introduction I would go with metric. I miss being told when measuring flour by the cup if I could scoop and smooth, or spoon in, and it will make a difference in the outcome of baked goods especially. The lack of introduction is the only negative I really have to say about this book and if I weigh the ingredients there are no issues.

The recipes are arranged by type:
Snack cakes
Layer cakes and cupcakes
cool and creamy cakes
fruit cakes
show stoppers

There is a more complete index in the back that is well arranged for finding specific types of cakes.

Recipes like the bourbon glazed brown sugar pecan cake are easy to make but the tasty results are wonderful. The carrot cake is good, I am not a fan of pineapple in my carrot cake and this one is really good and no pineapple.

There are classic recipes, carrot cake, lemon layer cake, classic crumb cake etc, but then there are interesting and delicious recipes that are a bit outside the regular cake, like the steamed coriander ginger-bread cake with eggnog creme anglaise.

The pictures are lush and inviting, and serve to show what the finish product should look like.

Recipes include make ahead tips, some include techniques for success, for example, how to marble. These tips and techniques are scattered throughout the book and will help make one a more knowledgeable baker in general.

Some recipes might look intimidating to a newer baker, with several steps like cake, filling, frosting, but the layout and explanations are so clear it's easy to follow the steps for success.

I received this book from netgalley in exchange for review, but will be purchasing it for my home library. It's excellent.

I requested this book because the cover looked delicious, I love cake and cupcakes and I could really go for some right now!

Organized by type of cake: snacking cakes, layer cakes, party cakes, and cupcakes, cool and creamy cakes, fruitcakes and showstoppers and special occasion cakes. I liked that every recipe had a picture with it, this helps a lot when I'm looking for recipes to bake. Classic recipes are included if you are going for something tried and true as well as original recipes and new twists.

The section that I went straight for was the Layer Cakes, Cupcakes and Other Party Cakes. I will definitely be trying the very first cake of this section in the summer, vanilla layer cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and raspberry jam (pictured on cover). It doesn't look too difficult to make either, even telling you in the direction what size lumps should be in the batter. Caramel Cupcakes with Butterscotch Frosting also looked interesting; reading over the instructions to make caramel was a little intimidating, but do-able. The Fruit Cake section also looked delicious. Lemon Chiffon Cake with Raspberry Creme looks great and has an easy whipped creme frosting. Angel Food Cake with Strawberries and Whipped Cream is another classic that I will have to try making from scratch. The Showstoppers and Special Occasion Cakes are a little more involved, but really tempting to give a try; like the Hot Chocolate Layer Cake with Homemade Marshmallows.

Overall, a good cookbook for anyone looking to get away from box-mixes or who has a sweet-tooth.

I am going to get straight to the point right now. This cookbook should be called: ‘STRAIGHT, NO CHASER’ due to the fact it starts upfront with recipes.Yes, that is correct. There are no introductions, no recommended tools or equipment, no pantry lists or must-haves. My kind of cookbook, indeed.

I would like to think that I am a decent cook. On the other hand, I am not the most fantastic baker in the world. After reading this cookbook, I am certain that I would have no trouble in preparing any of these recipes.

The chapters are appropriately named for each section. All the chapters and recipe titles are in small caps (love it!). I am going to share with you a few of my favorites from each section.

‘snacking cakes’ - pumpkin and cornmeal cake with orange syrup,

‘layer cakes, cupcakes & other party cakes’ – triple-lemon layer cake

‘cool & creamy cakes’ – coffee and cream icebox cake

‘fruit cakes’ – individual dried apricot and cranberry upside-down cakes

‘showstoppers & special occasion cakes’–chocolate-espresso mousse tarte

Other recipes include such classics as butter pound cake, german chocolate cake, cheese crumb cake, strawberry shortcake. This is a superb baking cookbook that should be added to all kitchen bookshelves. In addition, this would be a great gifting opportunity for the baker in your life.

I love the layout of this cookbook! It has beautiful photos that illustrate what the finished product should look like. Some have the recipes have illustrated steps as well.

The cookbook is divided into these sections:

snacking cakes
layer cakes, cupcakes & other party cakes
cool & creamy cakes
fruit cakes
showstoppers & special-occasion cakes

I had been looking for some good from scratch cake recipes and I have found them here. There are illustrated instructions on how to frost a cake. The recipe for Southern Devil's Food Cake looks divine...I cannot wait to try it. And I'm all over the four-layer cake with raspberry whipped cream and mixed berries. And the chocolate mousse layer cake has some excellent decorating ideas.

Let's face it, I'm a cookbook junkie and this cookbook is an excellent addition to my collection and more than fulfills my fix! I'm sold! Be sure to pick up a copy of this cookbook!

A great cookbook for lovers of sweets! 20. Mai 2014

I am a big lover of sweets and this cookbook is one that I am going to use for years to come. The photography is wonderful. The recipes are drool worthy but simple to follow. The variety and variations of recipes are outstanding and will inspire many a Sunday dessert at my home. With step by step instructions that includes photographs for anything that may become a little tricky such as the fancier Boston Cream Pie recipe even a novice baker would be willing to give it a try. My favorite technique shown in this cookbook is the finger method for spiking meringue, it's simple and would be a fun way to involve a child in helping with baking. I am happy to say that this is one of my favorite cookbooks that I have seen this year! It's well worth grabbing a copy of your own.
