Nearly 400 textiles from East and West are reproduced in full colour in this handbook of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's encyclopaedic collections, which cover a broad range of geographic areas, periods, and techniques. Europe and the Americas are represented by woven textiles, printed textiles, embroidery, lace, samplers, quilts and coverlets, while other sections illustrate the textiles arts of the Mediterranean and Middle East as well as India, Southeast Asia, China and Japan. Examples of 20th century international design complete this in-depth survey of some 10,000 textiles in the museum. Each chapter is introduced by a brief history of that particular aspect of the museum's collections, placing it within the context of textile scholarship and collecting in the United States and Europe.
