I've read about a dozen of Macdonald's Lew Archer novels, and this is one of the best. A very straight but nonetheless surprising plot, a mesmerizing, melancholic and brutal atmosphere, and an ending which reminds you of plays by Eugene O'Neill.
Archer comes into a town which is going downhill after an earthquake a couple of years ago. He finds a dying man, and from then on he is the stranger who has to stand up against everyone, including the local sheriff and a brutal gang. The language is even more beautiful than in some other Archer-novels, and there is more sex and action, too, including a shoot out in a ghost town in the mountains. The way Macdonald combines scenes like that with a moving psychological drama is just brilliant. It could be made into a great play, a graphic novel or a movie easily. You'll love it.
