Mike Oehler's book is practical, informative, of unique style and one hell of a nice read.
I doubt that the underground house design he suggests would meet the code in more and more U.S. states (in Germany it would be *verboten* everywhere), but in some nice places, even the classic design would still be legal. After presenting his classic style (which will work, I am talking as an engineer here) Oehler presents some more expensive details adapted to code needs, and even the pro & cons of evading the code :)
This remarkable book greatly influenced my own construction habits, and along with the build-it-with-straw-literature and Michael Reynolds "Earthship" series, it offers invaluable new ideas for modern alternative housebuilding.
Highly recommendable, even for the not (yet) experienced.
