Writing under the pseudonym of Johannes de silentio, Kierkegaard uses the form of a dialectical lyric to present his conception of faith. Abraham is portrayed as a great man, who chose to sacrifice his son, Isaac, in the face of conflicting expectations and in defiance of any conceivable ethical standard. The infamous and controversial 'teleological suspension of the ethical' challenged the contemporary views of Hegel's universal moral system, and the suffering individual must alone make a choice 'on the strength of the absurd'. Kierkegaard's writings have inspired both modern Protestant theology and existentialism.
Synopsis
First published in 1843 under a pseudonym, "Frygt og Baeven" is written in a quasi-dialogue form in which different facets of Kierkegaard's thought are presented to the reader. Without disclosing his own beliefs Kierkegaard confronts the reader with various ethical and religious attitudes, but leaves the responsibility of choice open. This new edition provides a chronology of the author's life and detailed notes to complement Kierkegaard's analysis of religion.

In Fear and Trembling you find the most strenght themes about faith and paradox. It is very human and very divine at the same time. You find the human contraddictions and the openings to the mistery of the faith. The faith knight is a very impressive figure. In this book you have the most paradoxal and fascinating description of Abramo and Isacco story.

Through the story of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac, Soren Kierkegaard (SK) unfolded the mistery of faith. SK searches to answer three problem, those are Is there such a thing as a teleological suspension of the ethical?, Is there such a thing as an absolute duty toward God? , and Was Abraham ethically justifiable in keeping silent about his purpose before Sarah, before Eleazar, before Isaac?. The ethical as such is the universal, and as the universal it applies to everyone, which may be expressed from another point of view by saying that it applies every instant (Kierkegaard). The task of the individual is to live up to the universal (ethical). Sin is when the individual places the individual above the universal. Yet, faith reforms whole schema, Faith is precisely this paradox, that the individual as the particular is higher than the universal, is justified over against it, is not subordinate but superior, yet in such a way, be it observed, that it is the particular individual who, after he has been subordinated as the particular to the universal, now through the universal becomes the individual who as the particular is superior to the universal, for the fact that the particular individual stands in an absolute relation to the absolute. On the second problem, SK answered it that our duty to God supersedes our duty to the ethical, as God is the basis for the ethical. Abraham's ethical duty is to love his son Isaac, but this is made relative in comparison to his relationship with God. On the third problem, SK mentioned that Abraham had no other choice. No one would have been able to understand what he was going through. Finally, SK tells us, Faith is the highest passion in a man. Such passion cannot be aroused by a dedication to an immutable ethical mandate, but only by a relationship to the personal God.

Kierkegaard first takes issue with the prevailing (i.e., Hegelian) notion that faith is something to be "transcended" by means of systematic philosophy, and almost baits the reader to consider what it means to go "beyond" faith anyway. Next, he postulates 4 thought experiments that (poetically) reconstruct the Abraham and Isaac ordeal, each of which is intended to show how the story might be harmonized with the prevailing Hegelian mode of understanding the "univeral" in ethical terms. Finally, the section on "Problemata" argues against three (at the time well-known) postulates of Hegelian ethical thought by showing that these are all inconsistent with some remarkable feature of the faith that Abraham evidences.
The section on the Knight of Infinite Resignation and the Knight of Faith provide, albeit obliquely, support for the view that the movement of faith is absolute, and cannot be transcended.
Hannay's introduction is excellent (however, I would suggest first skimming it, then reading Kierkegaard's book, then reading it in earnest at the end).
