Kurzbeschreibung

In Fatal Cut, the first novella in this ghostly Suburban Noir series, a man is brutally murdered in the church parking lot. Madison Keith is the only one not surprised by the identity of the killer. She has witnessed first hand the buried resentments and bitter hearts of the people at her new job, not to mention the appearance of those who have passed on.

Both the living and the dead like to reveal their secrets to Madison. As the administrative assistant in the basement office of a suburban church, she gets plenty of opportunity to hear from both.

This novella also includes the first two chapters of book two in the series, SHALLOW WATER.

Other books in this series include SHALLOW WATER (#2), UNHOLY CHILD (#3), STONE COLD (#4), DEADLY STREETS (#5), LONELY GHOSTS (#6), LAST CHANCE (#7), and EATEN ALIVE (#8). To receive updates when new books are released, go to Cathryn Grant's Amazon Author page.

In book five, DEADLY STREETS, Madison begins to confront ghosts from her past.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting character 21. März 2012
Von C. Thilmany - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Madison Keith takes the job of administrative assistant and receptionist at Central Avenue Church after leaving her higher paying job where she felt like one of many and wasn't needed. Her upbringing was a little unusual compared to other kids and it gives her the ability to see beneath the surface of a person's actions. She's got a different way of looking at things.

This is the first in a series of mystery novellas about Madison Keith. Much of this first one gives us Madison's background, taking on the job and learning about those who become central to the story. It begins with her telling us there is a corpse, and talking directly to the reader, tells us why she needs to give us some background first.

Madison's character is well-fleshed and someone I'd personally like to get to know. Since this is told in the first person we don't know a whole lot yet about Pastor Joe and Kate, the youth minister. We definitely need to learn more about Kate.

The novella is an easy pleasant read, although I feel somewhat mislead with the description of "ghostly psychological suspense series." I read a lot of urban fantasy and was expecting more on the paranormal angle.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Madison Keith, Not Your Typical Detective 10. November 2011
Von Christi Craig - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

"...I knew who had killed the guy, but I wasn't sure the police would see it that way, being all caught up in forensics and proper procedure as they are. Procedures always seem to obscure things, in my view."

With that quote, Cathryn Grant introduces us to Madison Keith, a quiet detective of sorts, who finds herself working at Central Avenue Church -- solving a murder. In true suspense form, Grant introduces us to several shady characters, from Pastor Kate to the gardener Fred (even gives us a bit of paranormal in the mix), and keeps us guessing until the end as to who killed and why. Too, from Chapter One, Madison Keith admits that a little murder won't send her packing, which means there more great suspense to come in Cathryn Grant's next novella.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Bet you can't read just one! 29. Juli 2011
Von Linda Cassidy Lewis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Cathryn Grant has given her protagonist Madison Keith a delightful voice. Madison is smart, witty, and more than a little curious--perfect for a church receptionist. She's also tattooed, pierced, and unusually perceptive. In this first of a series, Grant introduces us to Madison's particular brand of detection and mystery solving. Fatal Cut is a page-turning tale that will satisfy, but leave you hungry for the next one.

This is a so so read. As the start of a series, I find it a poor advert for such. There was no psychological suspense. Well, no suspense of any kind at all. I found this in a search of mystery /thrillers. No mystery and no thrill either. This book is very predictible and there was not one surprise or twist to it. I find that the quick visit of the ghost couple is not really enough to toss this into paranormal arena either. Especially since there was no interaction with or by them. They did not create any tension or plot devices. They did not interact (or try to) with any of the characters. It is unclear why they were there beyond our MC watching them with a tear in her eye due to sweetness of it.

The MC is a gal who downsizes her job for lack of wanting to be "just another cog" in big Corp. So, she takes a job at a church. Fine. No harm, no foul. But, no real storyline there. Just a quick interlude with boss - couple with Kate and a fairly developed friendship with an old gent. A quick encounter with murderer and a few vouyeristic moments with ghost couple. Then, dead body found and the rest of tale just told.

There was no detecting (for all things were overt) no case to solve (we were introduced to murderer and murder weapon within a day of murder). No worry about safety, no fear of shadows, no misleading evidence, no possible suspects (just the one that did it).

Was really a bland read that did not hit any high notes related to what one suspects for genre (paranormal things, suspense, mystery, angst, conflicts of emotion and people (beyond one fight). It is soldily written technically wise. But, there was no hook, no drive to find out who dun it, no rooting for any side, etc.

If you are a reader who just wants to read a story requiring little but time, you may enjoy this one. If you are a serious reader of mystery type, thrillers, suspense - this will likely fall far short of your desires.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Madison has a big heart and will capture yours 4. Juni 2012
Von Andrea Coventry - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Fatal Cut by Cathryn Grant is a psychological suspense novella that takes place in a church. From the opening paragraph in which Madison tells you that she found a dead body within six weeks of starting her job, you are hooked on her story. You want to know who is going to be murdered and who did it.

Madison Keith has a knack for really seeing into people's souls, minds and feelings. She likes to meditate, which opens up her mind. She has numerous earrings and tattoos and generally doesn't look like the kind of person you would expect to see siting behind the desk in a church office. But she also has a big heart.

Pastor Joe hires her to work in the office. Kate, who is in charge of the youth group, dislikes Madison from the start. In fact, Kate seems to have a chip on her shoulder about everything. Fred is in charge of the gardening. He is particularly concerned with the roses, which are mysteriously being cut during the night. He is convinced that some kids are out smoking pot every night, and shred the roses. Jan is the one who planted the roses, in memory of her daughter. She is convinced that Fred is the one responsible for them being shredded.

Madison is determined to figure out what is really going on at night, by relying on her intuition and "powers." She becomes involved in a supernatural world with intense love before stumbling upon a murder.

I liked this novella. The pages flew by as I read the story. I really like Madison and could see her as being one of my friends. She is opinionated without being rude, having no problem sharing her thoughts. Her big heart is endearing, as she is willing to do anything to help her friends.

The story was intriguing as the mystery of the shredded blooms began to unfold. I did feel that the opening paragraph was kind of a tease, though, and got impatient waiting for the murder to actually happen. I was also looking for the story to continue when it was over.

This novella is the first in a series of five. All of the stories are considered to be suspenseful and star Madison, who seems to have a knack for finding dead bodies. She is the kind of character I would be willing to follow.

I received a complimentary copy from BookRooster in exchange for my honest review.
