Kurzbeschreibung

What gown would you wear to be the belle of the ball in April 1811?

Choose any month and any year between 1809 and 1820 to find the most fashionable attire to wear in Regency England. Fashions in the Era of Jane Austen is a pictorial of images collected from Ackermann's Repository of the Arts.

Find splendid illustrations of morning, evening, riding, and walking dresses with the accompanying accessories: hats, shoes, scarves, jewelry, parasols and more. Over two hundred and seventy-five exquisite illustrations with the original accompanying descriptions as they were published over two hundred years ago. Discover the voice of the past through the written language of each narrative.

Fashions in the Era of Jane Austen covers twelve years of fashion, the last two years of the Georgian period (1809-1810) and the entire ten years of the Regency period (1811-1820).

Costume designers, researchers, authors, and fashion lovers will treasure these authentic examples of fashionable dress in the era of Jane Austen.

"The pictures alone make this a great book,
even if one doesn't read a word of the fashion descriptions."

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Fabulous Author's Resource 16. November 2012
Von Cheryl Bolen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
For those of us who write romances set in the England Jane Austen inhabited, Ms. Gayle's book is a rare find. All of it goes back to the original source, Akerman's Repository. This gem includes almost 300 elegant prints along with the original verbage.

For example, in one illustration of an 1810 carriage and promenade costume (what we call outfit), part of the description says thus: "The boots, it will be seen, are of crimson velvet, laced with gold cord. This mantle and cap are exceedingly elegant, when composed of emerald green velvet, trimmed with leopard skin. It is furnished by Miss Millman of Half-Moon Street, Piccadilly."

I would suggest downloading this book to your computer for better viewing of the lovely illustrations rather than looking at them on your black-and-white Kindle. This is highly recommended.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A really useful reference for lovers of fashion or fashion plate collectors 19. März 2013
Von K. Maxwell - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This is a perfect bound book that is an excellent reference for anyone interested in English fashion from 1809 to 1820. The book reproduces in colour most the fashion plates from Ackermann's repository of arts from those years and also provides the descriptions that were published with the fashion plates. Most of the plates from these years seem to be included in the book, though I have noticed some missing from 1812-1813.

The book is a wonderful reference for anyone interested in fashion during this period or for collectors of Ackermann's fashion plates. Books on these fashion plates are scarce and this will be an invaluable reference for collectors who may not otherwise ever get to see many of these fashion plates. The book is perfect bound and print on demand. It is not a glossy art book and there is some variation in the quality of the images but they are all easy to see in good size along with their descriptions underneath.

Now we just have to hope that there is a book which covers the period 1821-1829 and there'll be a close to full reference for people interested in these fashion plates.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Kindle Fire HD version successful on mine. 10. November 2013
Von Stephanie Daniels - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
I was a bit hesitant to purchase this when I saw the one review for Kindle that said the fashion plates were not very visible. Maybe this is a more recent edition because I found all of the plates to be in very good condition. I loved that I could long press them and use the zoom feature. I could not tell from the other multi-starred reviews whether they had purchased the Kindle version or print version, so I took the chance on this since it was free today. I'm glad I did. I'm a writer and I like to have many of these kinds of books on hand for reference. I don't know that I will ever write anything for this period, but for me, this is good inspiration if I ever decide to. A lot of pictures and good information to go along. Not at all disappointed.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Amazing color etching of original fashions with descriptions 27. April 2013
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
This wonderful book contains the original fashion etchings from Ackerman's Magazine in color with the descriptions from the period. The book costs $55 but this kindle version is a steal at $8.99. All you Regency Romance writers and even more important cover illustraters please take note and get your costumes authentic. In addition much info is given in the introduction and it is a joy to see these originals such as a Lady Dancing.
