I read the whole series as a child (including the prequel) so I already know they are good, even though I haven't yet bought the full Kindle version. I'd like to give this a better rating but I'm giving it a 3 because of what seems to be an omission or mistake in the description, which says that this is the first two of the series bound into one for good value. I'm glad they are putting two books into one, but this isn't actually the first two of the series. It is the prequel ("The Adventure Begins") and book #2, "In the Grip of Winter". Book #1, the most important book of the series ("The Animals of Farthing Wood") is not included in this product, and as far as I can tell, isn't available for Kindle yet at the time of writing this review. Hopefully #1 will also soon be published for Kindle to complete the series.
The two books included in this collection could be read as they are and enjoyed, but someone who is new to the series will be left wanting to know the full story of what took place between the prequel and "In the Grip of Winter". The prequel describes what took place in Farthing Wood, before the animals began their long journey to White Deer Park. Book #1 describes the journey itself. Book #2, "In the Grip of Winter", describes their first winter in White Deer Park. The other books describe their continued adventures in the park.
For those who've never read the series before, yes, they are good books. Probably not the best for very young children as there are parts in the stories that may be a bit too much for them - animals getting killed, etc. But there is plenty of adventure and peril for animal-loving preteens and older to enjoy. They are written from the animals' viewpoint, and they take place in Britain.
