This beautifully illustrated introduction to the SAARLAND invites the reader on a round tour of the state in 72 pages of pictures and text. Here, in this region on the German-French border, we are presented with a representative cross-section of the varied and attractive scenery of the Saarland, including its towns, castles, palaces, churches and abbeys.For outsiders, the common image of the Saarland has always been that of a coal and steel region, although the heavy industry belt was never an extensive one, being confined mainly to a stretch along the river Saar from Saarbrücken to Dillingen. Today, however, most of the old mines are no longer in use and have become industrial monuments. This introduction to the Saarland aims to break down old prejudices by taking the reader on a pictorial excursion through the state to explore its beautiful scenery and distinct cultural heritage. We guide you through the vineyards of the Moselle, past the dramatic Saar meander and the town! of Mettlach, and on to a round trip through the hilly landscape of the Saarland. On our journey we pass reservoirs, Lake Bostal and the towns of Weisskirchen, Nonnweiler, Wadern, Tholey, St Wendel, Ottweiler, Homburg and Blieskastel and explore the elegant city of Saarbrücken on the Saar. From here we travel to the industrial monument of Völklingen and the Devil’s Hill of Saarlouis and continue along the river Saar to Merzig, where our tour ends. The author of the introduction is no less than the distinguished German writer and foreign correspondent Peter Scholl-Latour. The picture texts were written by the Saarland journalist Traudel Brenner, while the colour photos are largely the work of Horst Ziethen. For both local people and visitors, this pictorial survey in three languages (German/English/French) will open up new aspects of the Saarland in both pictures and text and prove a compact yet informative guide to the region.

Ce beau livre de photographies en couleur invite à un circuit touristique à travers la SARRE, région frontalière entre la France et l'Allemagne. Il montre sur 72 pages un grand nombre de ses paysages variés, de ses villes, de ses châteaux, de ses cloîtres et églises. Pour ceux qui ne le connaissent pas, le Land Sarre n'évoque qu'un bassin minier, mais cela n'était vrai que pour une partie de la région. En effet, les mines et usines s'alignaient autrefois le long de la Sarre, entre Sarrebruck et Dillingen. La plupart des mines sont aujourd'hui désaffectées et leurs installations sont devenues des musées et monuments rappelant une ère révolue. Cet ouvrage veut également faire découvrir une autre facette de la Sarre, à savoir ses paysages splendides ainsi que ses curiosités naturelles et culturelles. Le voyage photographique nous emmène dans la région de vignobles de la Moselle jusqu'à la grande boucle de la Sarre et Mettlach. Le circuit se poursuit à travers une campagne vallonnée agrémentée de jolies rivières et de lacs de barrages. Nous visitons Weisskirchen, Nonnweiler, Wadern, Tholey, St. Wendel, Ottweiler, Homburg, Blieskastel avant d'arriver à Sarrebruck, la capitale élégante du Land. Nous partons ensuite pour Völklingen, monument de l'ère industrielle sarroise, puis pour le Teufelsberg à Sarrelouis et longeons la Sarre jusqu'à Merzig où se termine le voyage. La préface a été écrite par le célèbre auteur Peter Scholl-Latour tandis que les légendes des photographies sont dues à Traudel Brenner, journaliste sarroise. La plupart des clichés ont été captés par Horst Ziethen.
