From Booklist

Fanny Kemble was one of Europe's most celebrated actresses; her sister, Adelaide, one of its greatest opera singers. Blainey's dual biography of those two spirited women draws heavily on letters the sisters wrote one another, including a set discovered quite recently, to give us a good look at the inner workings of English theater of the late 1700s through the mid-1800s and the role that women played in the arts then. Blainey also analyzes the love-hate relationship that both sisters had with their respective careers. Each was painfully aware of the stigma placed on actors and singers and understood that her career made it much more difficult for her to marry well and then to provide her children a decent standing in society. Blainey paints vivid portraits of two determined, strong-willed women, describing the struggles that Fanny and Adelaide faced in choosing to develop and exploit their talents and making clear the social and personal pressures that shaped their lives. From Library Journal

Close on the heels of Catherine Clinton's well-received Fanny Kemble's Civil Wars (LJ 8/00) comes another account centered on this fascinating 19th-century actress turned abolitionist and supporter of women's rights. Kemble (1809-93), the most famous English-speaking actress of her day, gave it all up to marry one of America's richest plantation owners. However, her disgust at slavery spurred her to write Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation (1863), which was a groundbreaking work challenging the institution of slavery. But this is not just Fanny's story. Blainey (The Farthing Poet, Immortal Boy) devotes half of the book to Adelaide, Fanny's younger sister, who was an opera star in her own right. This first full biography of Adelaide was written with Blainey's exclusive use of Kemble family letters. This fresh, scholarly look at two daring women is highly recommended. This may well be an historically accurate and well researched book. It is about two very interesting women, and uses apparently new sources on their relationship. The odd footnote would have been good.

So would some excitement.

I am impressed at how Blainey makes two interesting lives, especially that of the more famous Fanny, seem really quite tedious. She does not seem to have completely mastered the background to her subjects - she mentions the girls longing to join the fashionably dressed tailors and shop keepers as they promenaded in a park, which seems unlikely socially or career-wise. Blainey also mentions Fanny criticising the vulgar flowers in New York. This is an instance where her failure to quote directly from letters really lets her down - if this is true, the quote would be both funny & insightful, but appearing in a list of other problems, appears merely odd.

There are time periods of years that are passed over in a couple of lines, the author refers to her success in showing a new argument, but again, fails to provide a direct quote or source then & there, and what should be a fascinating double biography fails to grab the reader.

Ann Blainey has done some remarkable, wonderful, and wholly original research to complete her excellent study, FANNY AND ADELAIDE. I found the book fascinating and wish I had Blainey's book in hard when I was preparing my own work on Fanny Kemble [FANNY KEMBLE'S JOURNALS AND FANNY KEMBLE'S CIVIL WARS]....I can vouch for Blainey's scholarly sensitivity and her vivid analysis: we may not agree with each other on every point, but I want to encourage those interested in this fascinating pair, those with an interest in 19th century women, and those looking for a smashing good read to buy Blainey's book!

I found this book to be a disappointment. I have ready many other books about Fanny Kemble and her tremendous contributions to the Abolitionist Movement. This book was sorely lacking in information regarding her courage and determination to stand up to the Pro-slavery forces which included her husband and children.

The information about Adelaide's life was interesting. However, it seemed that Ms Blainey deliberately left out the inspiring political story of Fanny's life so as to keep the story of Adelaide's life on an even keel with Fanny's. To my mind, choosing to leave out information about Fanny so that Adelaide would not seem unexciting by comparison was a bad choice. Ms. Blainey's book would have been better had she included the truth about both sisters -- that Fanny fought against slavery at great personal sacrifice in addition to supporting herself financially as one of England's successful Shakespearean actresses while Adelaide chose to have a life primarily as a homemaker after resigning from her successful Operatic career.

Ms. Blainey also emphasized jealousies between the sisters a bit too much. One wonders if she did so to make her story more acceptable to Hollywood, hoping that her book would be made into a movie. I have read of no other jealousies between the sisters from any other source. If the jealousies had been as bad as Ms. Blainey writes I believe I would have read about it from other researchers and authors as well.
