HASH(0x9559f150) von 5 Sternen Sweet, light romance 21. Dezember 2011

Format: Kindle Edition
Laura is a pediatric oncology nurse whose life is altered when a patient dies. What began as a way to cope with a personal tragedy has now become a debilitating addiction, and her family and friends have staged an intervention. As she enters rehab, we meet Bradley, a former fighter pilot who lost the use of his voice when a missile he launches kills NATO forces. Although an investigation reveals it was not Bradley's fault, he cannot forgive himself for the tragedy.

Bradley and Laura meet when they both find work at a winery. Their attraction is instant, but their communication is somewhat hindered due to their mutual reluctance to discuss the past and Bradley's use of a BlackBerry to communicate. Just when things begin to fall into place for the couple, tragedy strikes again. This time, it could keep them apart forever....

I enjoyed the format of the story. It's told from alternate points of view, so we get inside the heads of both characters. The story line is predictable (as are most romances), but enjoyable nonetheless. It's also a very unique twist in that both characters are extremely damaged. There is a damsel-in-distress scene, which I could have done without. Laura becomes such a strong character and overcomes her addictions and past failures, and I would have liked to see her rescue herself in the end. However, there is a happily ever after, which is the way all romances should end.

There are no graphic scenes. My only complaint is with the dialogue. There's no witty or flirty dialogue between Bradley and Laura. Sometimes, the dialogue is awkward, even. In parts, it appears the characters are speaking to let the reader know what's happening, not really interacting with other characters. With a different cover and some revised dialogue, this book would be much more enjoyable. As it is, it is a sweet romance with no real surprises, but it's a pleasant afternoon read.

I picked up this book while it was free on Kindle, so on some level I have no right to complain. However, there were some things I found to be very objectionable, and my hope is the author can use the opinions in these customer reviews to hone her craft.
The first part of the book was okay, though anyone who has any friends going through any type of recovery from addiction knows that the addict is encouraged to take personal responsibility for their actions. For me, the main character was stuck in victimhood and blaming others for her fall from grace. But the point where I put the book down in disgust was the same moment mentioned by another reviewer, though for a different reason. The author saw fit to kill off the heroine's best friends; apparently she couldn't think of another way to provide conflict for the H/h to overcome. What made my hair stand on end was the fact that the heroine, coming straight from an agreement to seriously pursue her relationship with the hero, then drives away without a word. A few facts about the hero have already been established: 1. He always carries a blackberry with him, as he's non-verbal and it's his only way to communicate in real time. Completely simple to have sent the guy a text. Barring that, they're working at a hotel - leave a note at the desk, voice mail on his room phone, stick a Post-It to his door, for cripes' sake. 2. His loss of speech is due to severe trauma. The heroine, a trained nurse, sees fit to disappear in this way from the life of someone who's already very delicately balanced? It's not only deeply stupid, it's also unethical, and downright mean. I stopped reading mid-sentence, deleted the book, and have no plans to purchase anything else written by this author unless I can be persuaded she's treating her characters, and her readers, with more respect and intelligence.

HASH(0x95ea866c) von 5 Sternen Contrived story, confusing writing style 21. Mai 2012

I don't review many books. Mainly because the writing of the "free Kindle books" can be anywhere from fantastic to terrible....and a large percentage are in the "okay to terrible" range. So I don't bother reviewing them.

This book is an interesting story, so far. I haven't gotten too far into it yet but I am enjoying the characters. But here is why I am writing this (in case the author ever reads her reviews.) There is a line which reads "She'd talked once..(to someone).....who was an avowed athiest. He'd said that he could see more of God when he looked up into the trees........"
The author must not realize that an athiest would not see God anywhere. An athiest doesn't BELIEVE in God. So ... this is just one of frequent in free Kindle books.

Update: I have now finished reading this book, and do not plan to read any others by this author. The writing is just....strange. There was a scene where hero watches heroine come out of the lake naked and dripping. Then the next scene was heroine deciding to strip and go into the lake. The timeframe made no sense, and this was not the only instance in the book. It was not consistently written that way (the way some books keep going back and forth and you understand what is happening because that is the style of the book.) This book is NOT that style. It is just poorly written. And the story was very contrived.

I liked this story. The two primary characters were well developed - likeable, and down-to-earth with baggage that could belong to anyone you know. I especially liked the way the author took the time to give enough background for the reader to see just how easy it is to fall into the grips of addiction or depression. And, I liked the storyline about the vinyard giving jobs and fresh starts to recovering addicts - of all addictions. My one wish about the story is that after carefully sculpting this lovely story, it almost seems as if the author got tired of writing and gave the story's ending a bum's rush. The bad guy came and went in very few pages and both of the primary characters wound up happily ever after in the same amount of pages. I would have liked to see the resolution come a little slower so as to provide an example for others who are looking for their own light at the end of a tunnel. I would definitely read other work by this author. I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.

HASH(0x961625b8) von 5 Sternen An ok romance but needs some research on addiction 29. Juni 2012
Von Regina Niesen - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
In this story Laura is approached by her family and friends about her prescription drug addiction and agrees to go to rehab. The rehab part of the books is very quick and it seems as if the author just didn't bother doing research so she didn't write about it. While in rehab, Laura meets Faith and after they are released from rehab they decide to go to a program that helps recovering addicts with a job and a stable and peaceful environment. This program is a winery and the girls jobs are to be chambermaids for the hotel and general clean-up that is needed. Of course both girls meet the man of their dreams and they live happily every after.

But there is a problem with this whole set-up. One of the things addicts learn in rehab is to stay out of intimate relationships because they are supposed to be focusing on their recovery, not the needs of a boyfriend. Also the idea of any kind of addict working at a winery is simply not going to happen if that person is taking their recovery seriously. I just feel like the author didn't do her research in this area but needed something to set up her romantic plot and she chose addiction and recovery.

However, even with my criticism of the realities of addiction not being examined at all, I did enjoy the book. It was light reading and I read it in one sitting. I haven't read a romance in awhile and that part of the book is mild compared to what's out there right now (Fifty Shades of Gray). I also liked the happy ending even though part of it was a little hard to believe. All in was an ok book for a freebie. 3 stars.
