(Thanks for all the fan email! The screenwriting gigs were a blessing, but I'm back now. Before the Fall will be a bit darker with more literary depth and flair - a product of the years between that first draft of Fall back in the day and now.)

"DSH's writing is witty, smart and precise." - Chicago Sun-Times
  • New illustrations by renown UK fantasy artist Sandara!
For fans of Neil Gaiman (SANDMAN: SEASON OF MIST) and Steven Brust (REIGN IN HELL)
And so it came to pass in the waning days of our century that a curious deal was struck between Heaven and Hell, or more specifically between Lucifer Morning Star and the Presence.
The Book of Life, that book that holds the names of those souls deemed for salvation has been stolen from the Silver City. Without the Book there can be no Judgement as foretold in the Revelation.
Two renegade angels are suspect and are believed to be on Earth.
For reasons known only to himself, Lucifer accepts the deal with Heaven to recover the Book of Life.
But jealousy and pride are not an exclusive domain. A small band of angels lead by Mika'il, the Angel of Vengeance seeks to stop him.
Accompanying the Morning Star on the most important quest in Creation are Maggie McCreedy, a recently widowed romance writer now witness to Lucifer's Testament; Duma, a misfit angel who almost joined in the Fall; Andrew Honeybone, a not quite yet dead, but rotting lawyer, and Mr. Pouge, an enigmatic gorilla of a man.
Together their journey takes them from the Silver City of Heaven to the Ninth Circle of Hell to the now desert wasteland of an earthly Eden.
It is a mythical mystery tale of redemption, deceit, salvation, betrayal and faith.

The Fallen Chronicles: Book One.

and then... Book Three: HELL'S GATE:  A US Armored Cavalry Regiment finds themselves in a strange new land...
and then...  probably Book Four: WINTER: The Siege of Heaven

Praise for CLONING CHRIST: The Second Book of Daniel
Number 7 on the Amazon UK Thriller Best Seller List!

"CLONING CHRIST heralds a mercurial new talent to the page!  Quirky, riveting, hilarious, disturbing, and unclassifiable (in the best sense), CLONING CHRIST is  a page-turner that is at once magically realistic and completely allegorical."
- Jay Bonansinga, National Bestselling Author of PINKERTON'S WAR, PERFECT VICTIM, and co-author of THE WALKING DEAD TRILOGY.

Praise for FOUNTAIN
"Darkly funny... a howling success!"
"Smart, inventive, and accomplished."
"David Scott Hay has done a something incredible - an artful book about an arty subject that doesn't drop into pretension. 'FOUNTAIN' is an affecting story about tough, interesting people who hold beauty up like Achilles' shield against a very real, very bitter, and oddly funny world. A must for fans of sharp tongues and sharp writing."

I'm an obsessed reader of e-books. As such, I scour Amazon's selections for good indie and traditionally published works, I sample 'em, and I buy the rare treasures that compel me to continue reading beyond the free 10% sample. FALL passed my selection process, and I'm happy to have burned through its pages in a matter of hours.

Hay has already enjoyed significant praise from sources such as Chicago Sun-Times, so I won't go into detail about his credentials as an author. Nonetheless, he is selling FALL at a modest $2.99, which is a ridiculous steal for such quality writing.

The new cover art is especially striking, and the title remains ironic and intriguing. Hay has crafted a modern and original questing tale, filled with compelling characters and rich dialogue. (Immediately, one gets a sense of the tale's originality from the description.) Here's what struck me most, though--and what secured my decision to toss $2.99 into Hay's laptop case: The man knows how to turn a phrase. He understands craft, and the prose is as delightful as the story. (I especially loved Chapter 6--well done, sir.) In essence, Hay manages to combine the pacing and tension of a paperback genre novel with the language, rhythm, and imagery of literary fiction. It's impressive, and I wish more authors could pull this off.

In terms of criticism, there are a few moments when I needed to flip back in order to understand why a character made a certain choice, but that's mostly due to the fact that we're dealing with biblical characters who have rich histories in religious and secular literature. (Allusions abound, by the way.) Also, I was surprised by Hay's interpretation of Lucifer, which goes against the usual suave and clever depiction--this one is ruled by his emotions, to say the least--but that's entirely a matter of taste.

Readers looking for beautiful scenes of the afterlife and celestial existence should stop right here. In Hay's universe, angels aren't any wiser than humans, and it could be argued they are much less wise, in fact. As far as divine justice ... well, let's just say that there's little indication that good is always rewarded while evil is always punished. Got a problem with that? Too bad, the author seems to suggest. Heaven's in political turmoil, Eden's a wreck, and Earth's got some real demon-trouble. One might wonder whether God's plan is working out so well. On the other hand, maybe the struggles faced by Hay's band of unlikely heroes are exactly what they need in order to rise above the sins of their collective father.

Or, maybe they're just screwed.

Give FALL a sample and figure it out for yourself. I'm glad I did.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great New Take on The Relationship Between Heaven & Hell 25. Juli 2011
Von Susan J. Rea - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is fresh new take on the relationship between Heaven & Hell that is at times gripping and humerous. Reading the first book of this new trilogy will leave you wanting more. My first reaction upon finishing the book was WOW!!! Fall starts with Book of Life being stolen & Lucifer being summoned by Presence to retrieve it. Lucifer agrees to this request in return for a favor from the Presence. Accompanying Lucifer on this journey is Duma, a somewhat rebellious angel, Maggie, a widowed romance writer and Andrew Honybone, a not quite deceased lawyer. Don't let the reIigous overtones fool you. The book is about temptation, redemption, unlikely friendships as well as unlikely enemies. I found myself pulling for Lucifer & shedding a few tears for him. I have not seen him so sympathically portrayed (well somewhat) before. I liked the way the author portrayed Duma as someone I can pull for as an angel who was almost part of the Fall but did not follow Lucifer but is still a bit rebellious. I really liked Maggie, the witness, who is a strong, independent minded lady who isn't afraid to hold a doble barreled shot gun on Lucifer. I found the first couple of chapters a bit slow going but after that the book picked up speed so much I couldn't stop reading it. I think Honeybone was the voice of honesty & provided a humorous viewpoint. I look forward to reading the next book on David Scott Hay's trilogy. I received a complimentary copy of the book in order to review it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic 4. Oktober 2011

I got this book for the kindle very soon after it was first released. It was the first book I bought for my kindle, and it is still, after 20 some books later, one of my favorites. This book was captivating, interesting, and extremely refreshing. I have been waiting most of my life for a story or book that portrayed Lucifer as a hero rather than a villain. They are few and far between. How He was portrayed in this story was exactly what I was looking for, this book was intensely satisfying.
I enjoyed every character in this book, there is literally nothing I can complain about in this book, other than me wanting more, and hoping and praying that Lucifer is in the second book.
I absolutely adore the amount of philosophy in this book. If you can understand, or simply take the time to understand it, it is actually very gratifying.
I have recommended this book to nearly everyone I have met who would have an interest in such subject matter. I greatly recommend it to anyone who reads this. At the very least, get the sample. Or spend the money to get it, it is not expensive in the least. I personally think it is worth much more than the price however.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A good and engaging story 20. Oktober 2012

I recently purchased this book and I have to give David credit. He wrote a well thought out book and while it could have done without some misc. Charachters I can see where they did add something even if it was all for nothing. David has a solid grasp of the concept of writing which considering most of the books you get for under 3.00 is saying something in and of itself. I would and I have recommended this book to others and I don't do that very often if at all. I give credit where it is due and its certainly due here. Good Job David and I am looking forward to reading other things by you.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Intriguing Biblical Fantasy 30. Dezember 2011
Von Kindle Customer - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Fall: The Last Testament of Lucifer Morningstar by David Scott Hay is a biblical fantasy involving Lucifer and the quest for the lost Book of Life. Lucifer is called to heaven and and given the order by God, who in this book is called The Presence, to return to Earth to retrieve the Book of Life. He is allowed to take one angel with him, the handicapped Duma. Once on earth they recruit a human witness, Maggie McCreedy, a successful but disillusioned romance writer. Her job will be to write the story of the search for the Book of Life. Along the way they recruit Andrew Honeybone, a romantically inclined but dead human who holds the key to the location of the book. All Andrew wants, however, is to see his wife one last time. As the search progresses, Lucifer must tangle with the Archangel Mika'il, as well as a horde of rebellious angels from hell who are looking to supplant Lucifer as ha-satan. In the climactic scene, Lucifer returns the Book of Life to heaven and reveals a traitor in the midst of the archangels. Duma returns to earth and finds the key to the gates of hell, which leads us to a cliffhanger ending.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. It is a fast, satisfying read, although I am growing annoyed with the cliffhanger endings that seem to be popular among indie authors these days. The characters of Maggie and Andrew are my favorites, with the best scene being the "reunion" of Andrew with his wife during a confrontation with the angels from hell over the Book. The author has left plenty of loose ends to be tied up in the next installment in this series, which I am looking forward to.

I received this book free in exchange for a review. Initially, I was concerned that it was not something I would enjoy due to the subject matter, but I'm glad I kept an open mind. There's nothing sacrilegious here, unless you are a big fan of the archangel who turns out to be a traitor.
