Kurzbeschreibung

Some memories are better off lost in the mist…

Eight months ago, British academic Paul Ansell lost his lover—and all the memories of their time together—in an accident at Iceland’s Gullfoss Falls. Returning to the misty island country to resume his study of the bloodthirsty Viking Egil Skallagrimsson is tough as he struggles to pull his life back together.

First, there’s his colleague, Mags, who treats him like glass, and summer student Alex, who peppers him with discomforting questions. Then there’s Icelandic jet-boat driver Viggo, a tattooed, modern-day Viking who won’t say much about how they know each other. Leaving Paul to wonder if their volcanic attraction is fuelled by a desire to make a fresh start, or desperation to forget the past.

As more fragments of his lost memories fall into place, Paul is unsure if he can trust himself, much less anyone around him. And he begins to suspect his accident was nothing of the kind.

Warning: Contains a modern-day Viking whose boat has V8 engines for oars, and a harsh land of hot springs and hotter passions that won’t forgive any false steps.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Spannend und individuell 29. Juni 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf

Juni 2014

It's like a really good but subtle thriller - only it'real. Paul had an accident and can't remember one year of his life - all of his time in Iceland. Now he is back trying to regain his life. But he doesn't know his colleagues anymore and after a few weird conversations he isn't sure that he knows himself that well. And what about his boyfriend who died in the same accident he only barely survived? Not knowing if he can trust anyone - even himself - he desperately wants to remember... or better not? Maybe his amnesia is for some reason.
The story is a wonderful page-turner full of suspense, lovely characters (or are they not?), uncertainties, mistrust and suspicion and interesting snippets from a local hero. And all the moments where I composed several possibilities for the development, thankfully the author ignored my overimaginative head and continued otherwise - but so much better. An authentic story I loved reading.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very good book! 5. April 2014

Okay, okay, I can't even explain why I loved this book. It just felt so real, so normal and still thrilling and ...damn...have you seen that cover? I mean, have you seen that guy on the cover? Wouldn't you love to be a little mouse watching him having sex? Okay, stop, of course the book isn't about sex...but it has some in it and it's very hot. It's mainly about Paul trying to settle back in his old life after nearly dying and still suffering from amnesia. Who is who, how was his relationship with everybody, why can't he remember his lover, who had died? A lot of questions and not enough answers...well written.

For me it was the right book at the right time :)

4.0 von 5 Sternen I want my own Viggo! 19. September 2013
Von M. Levy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
4.25 stars

Paul has spent the last eight months in England recovering from a fall from Gullfoss Falls (is that even possible?). After this long recovery he is left with a limp and short term loss memory. He can't remember anything that happened during his one year living in Iceland. But it is now time to go back to Iceland and Paul's return brings him a lot of frustration and confusion. He can't remember anyone of his friends, colleagues or anything that happened.

I think JL Merrow did a great job at portraying Paul's frustration, confusion and loss in confidence from his short term memory loss. I found myself wanting to reach out and shake him and tell him to "just ask what happened already!" Anyway, I could really feel the frustration.

I also found myself at times a bit broken hearted because of Viggo. Paul feels Viggo is familiar to him and can't deny their attraction, and well he doesn't. These two jump in bed fairly quickly after Paul gets back even though Paul doesn't really "know" him (well, remember him really). But it broke my heart a bit to see that things to Viggo mean more than to Paul originally and he restraints his feelings for Paul to give each other a new start.

All I want to say is that I loved this book because I loved Viggo even though we don't learn very much about him. But we do learn that he is a lonely, caring and sweet guy.

This book also gets the thumbs up from me for poking fun to Icelandic, British and American cultures. The jabs are subtle but they are there and I enjoyed them.

I RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A FREE REVIEWING COPY FROM THE AUTHOR.

I think by now I am pretty sure that when I will open the book by this writer, the technical side of the writing won't disappoint. I do not mean that I have the qualifications to evaluate the technical side of the writing, but her book always feel well written to me - it flows well, settings are descriptive, etc. I guess I always respect how her books are written even if I do not always love them.

I really loved how Iceland came alive on the pages of this book. In fact, settings were probably my favorite part. The story itself was well, dragging on and on and while it was not very long, I had to put it aside couple of times. I guess it was kind of boring and NOT because of the subject matter. That was one of the most frustrating parts. I loved seeing Paul being portrayed as somebody who is dedicated to his academic work, I wanted to know more, not less and still I felt that the pacing of the story was off. Maybe the point was that we were supposed to be frustrated with Paul, on behalf of Paul because he struggled to remember? I do not know, but certainly I was frustrated for whatever reason.

Romance was not very prominent, and that's an understatement. But I knew it was supposed to be mostly a mystery and I did not expect it to be very romantic, although more interactions between the potential couple would have been nice.

Mystery was weird. I have to give the kudos where its due, I was surprised, I was sure somebody else would be a villain, but the ending was just so meh.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved it 19. September 2013

Paul returns to Iceland where he was in an accident that took the life of his lover, Sven, and his memory of his entire time in Iceland. Paul remembers blue eyes but, not who they belonged to. I found myself wondering, along with the main character, what had happened. Paul meets Viggo and feels the attraction and feels as if he knows him better than anyone is admitting.

The descriptions of Iceland were amazing and well-written. The characters well believable and interesting. The questions and concerns Paul has are realistic. I tried to imagine just losing a year of memories and not knowing what you did or why. This book kept me interested from the beginning until the end.

I have read all of J L Merrow's books, and this one is my favorite. I loved the eerie backdrop of Iceland where it is dark most of the time and so cold with the freezing rain , I just wanted to climb in bed and get all snuggy. I loved all the characters, even as I wondered if they each had something to do with the accident and Sven's death. Paul couldn't remember anything so who knows he could have been guilty also. This book kept me riveted the entire story. I loved it!!! At 2960 locations and $3.44 what a steal. The romance was well done and quit believable. The sex scenes hot. Well what more could you ask for???

4.0 von 5 Sternen Enjoyable with a few niggles. 20. September 2013

Her writing does not disappoint. Paul's struggle with his memory loss for that one year of his life was well conveyed. However I just felt there was too much focus on one historical Iceland antihero and the country itself. Don't get me wrong. It was not boring but I rather the writer focus more on the emotional aspect of Paul's reawakening romance with Viggo, not just the sex, and Viggo's character. Even Paul's female colleague gets more screen time. The almost instant sex when Paul could not remember Viggo in the beginning was also a damper. I also expected more in the revelation towards the end because the beginning of the story has such potential. Still an enjoyable read which held my interest until the end.
