This isn't a commentator's diatribe against the sport, but rather a fan's case for baseball. What do I want? I think the same thing that most baseball fans want: To see the game prove worthy of our devotion.

Bob Costas loves baseball. And he's worried about the state of the game--superstar players abandoning the teams that helped them rise to greatness, the awkward interleague play system, the pennant-race-weakening wild cards, and the payroll disparity that effectively eliminates two-thirds of the teams in the league from having any chance to win the World Series--even before opening day. Costas addresses these problems and offers provocative solutions in Fair Ball.

Costas makes it clear from the outset that he's not a romantic, baseball-should-be-played-in-flannel traditionalist; indeed, some of his ideas--comprehensive revenue sharing and salary caps and floors--will be seen as radical by many team owners and players. Others are more standard--no more wild card, and farewell to the DH--but all are thoughtful and cogently argued.

Throughout Fair Ball Costas's affection for the national pastime softens his occasionally strident tone. Think of it this way: your incredibly cute drinking partner opens his mouth and metamorphoses into a baseball wonk. He pushes aside your brew and delivers--in the cadenced tones of a very famous sportscaster--an extended diatribe, carefully thought out and logically developed, about the current and future state of the game. You are enchanted. That's what it's like reading Costas' passionately argued screed. He has a Plan. Balance the revenue, he pleads, laying it out in charts that show how major-league baseball could practice revenue sharing and make it work, saving the lesser franchises from being permanent also-rans. Cap and bottom salaries, he exhorts, laying that out with incentives and a reworking of free agency. He realigns baseball with only one team shifting leagues: the Houston Astros, and makes so strong a case against the wild card that any objections are swept aside with the beer. In the end, he talks about the designated hitter, the All-Star game, umpires, and Pete Rose, too. He makes it all seem right without once letting go of his toe-curling delight in the game itself. Costas says he's a Bull Durham guy, not a Field of Dreams guy, but if we read it, maybe they'll all come to their senses. GraceAnne A. Ich hatte zuvor das Buch gelesen (und auch bereits rezensiert), trotzdem habe ích mir auch die Kassetten gekauft.

Und hier kommt Bob Costas einfach noch viel besser rüber als nur auf dem Papier. Seine Stimme ist angenehm und bekannt und seine Argumente nach wie vor überzeugend und glasklar.

Ich werde mal in meine Weihnachtswünsche aufnehmen, das die MLB-Eigentümer dieses Buch und seine erstklassigen Vorschläge endlich zur Kenntnis nehmen.

Any Baseball Fan can only agree to the proposals laid out by BC in this book. If only anyone in Baseball would listen to him. Are the guy running the NFL and NBA so much smarter than the ones in MLB ? Hard to believe - though the current situation tells us different.

Warum sinken die Einschaltquoten ständig? Warum sinken die Fanartikel Absatzzahlen? Warum gewinnen immer die selben Teams? (Yankees)Welche Fehler wurden bei der Reorganisation der Liga nach dem Spielerstreik von 1993 gemacht? Bob Costas gibt schonungslose Antworten: Alles hängt mit der Verteilung der Gelder aus den TV Rechten, der Gier einzelne Besitzer und vieler Spieler zusammen. Bob Costas lehnt sich dabei weit aus dem Fenster: er macht eigene Vorschläge, wie dem amerikanischen Baseball geholfen werden kann - und hat sich unter Besitzern und Spielern nicht nur Freunde gemacht. Das Buch beschreibt, analysiert und zeigt Lösungsmöglichkeiten auf. Zunächst einmal ist es ein Sachbuch über den Profisport in den USA, erst als zweites ein Baseballbuch. Man sollte zumindest die wichtigsten Akteure des US Baseballs kennen (in wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht), um das Buch interessant zu finden. Englisch auf Sachbuchniveau ist erforderlich. Zusammenfassend: Ein Buch nur für den wahren US-Baseballfan, der sich kritisch über die Liga informieren will.
