Mr. Gardner's work is an educational and frequently entertaining work that ends up going on a bit too long. I had a problem with his method many times of not refuting some of the bizarre claims and theories presented, but instead holding them up for ridicule as invalid on their face. It ends up not really being educational on those points, and doesn't provide a rational basis for rejection of the different theories. Most of the crackpot theories presented can be rejected by a reasonably well educated person without too much consideration, but possessing the actual arguments and facts that disprove those theories (done in a number of sections) would both sharpen the presentation and provide ammunition for either refuting those theories or prodding others to think. It seems to me that the first tool of skepticism should be rational analysis, and ridicule and similar appeals to emotion should be used sparingly. There are certainly established phenomena today that could be ridiculed as outlandish and unthinkable...if only they didn't happen to be true. The book does provide a depressing picture of just how long such "science" has been with us, leading one to the inevitable conclusion that the human race is doomed to the continued proliferation of such gobbledygook, no matter the accomplishments of science and education. In the end I think it's a worthwhile read that will convince few people to be more skeptical, but does provide the skeptical with a greater understanding of just how much garbage there is out there. I personally found Sagan's This Demon Haunted World to be a much stronger and worthwhile read on this score.

Although written in the 1950s, Martin Gardner's Fads and Fallacies is one of the masterpieces of science. Gardner tackles both seriously and humorously the pseudoscience of his day, including flying saucers, flat-earthers, dianetics, medical cults, dowsers, orogonomy, Atlantis historians, and many more. From Trofim Lysenko's efforts to overthrow Darwin's theory of evolution for Lamarck's theory of acquired characteristics in Russia, to the hilarious chapter on Charles Fort's philosophy of "accept everything but believe nothing" in our own country, Gardner paints a marvelous portrait that will make the reader roll their eyes and smile at some people's credulity as well as be shocked at how far some will go to search for and believe in what isn't there. What strikes me as the most prominent thing about this book is that he almost seems to be addresing the pseudoscience/antiscience of our day instead of decades past. In summary, his essays will bring the reader's mind to a more a skeptical level of thinking when faced with current claims that resemble those of yester-year. Gardner's book is a fitting prequel to Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World as it not only debunks the false claims of pseudoscience, but also educates the reader's mind about what real science is while maintaining an apt for wonder.

I agree with other reviewers. I also couldn't help but laugh out loud several times while reading it, this is a really funny book. I think it was just such a good idea to compile all those fads once they were known to be fallacious, so that people could laugh at them while at the same time becoming a little more aware of how insidiously gullibility works and what it can do. Very instructive. Other highly recommendable books in these pseudo-science debunking lines are Sagan's "The Daemon Haunted World" and Gilovich's "How we know what isn't so".
