Facilitative Coaching is a resource to both experienced coaches and those newer to the field. The breadth of their experience equips Schwartz and Davidson with concrete techniques that have proven successful over years of coaching. For those who are new to coaching, the book contains a theoretical base that underlies the techniques which are designed to help clients move beyond their current reality to courageously pursue their dreams. The theoretical base is presented in a way that is easily understood and applicable to real life situations. The model weaves together the connections between the inner work of the coach, the inner work of the client and the holding container: the coaching relationship. The authors' coaching process is built upon a long-researched theory about creativity. It explains and predicts what occurs when individuals move beyond the `survival' mode and into the `creativity mode.'
The wide array of techniques described in the book are designed to address the different challenges at each stage of the creative process. The authors' broad experience in coaching provides them with an array of powerful techniques that help people tap into what they really want and enable them to engage the inevitable blockages that arise when we dare to pursue what we really want. The list of techniques begins with ways to help clients clarify their purpose. The authors' position is that we must first know our purpose before we can mobilize how to reach it. One of the strengths of this book is that the techniques it describes utilize both the right brain and the left brain. For example, I love the chapter entitled: Asking your Inner Critic to Step Aside. This technique acknowledges the inner dialogue that so often arises when we dare to dream. The technique described in this chapter is simple but powerful, and it reflects authors' deep understanding of how to effectively engage a side of our psyche that can easily dissuade us from moving beyond survival to full creativity.
More linear techniques like Writing a Life Line enable clients to capture information about themselves that can easily be overlooked when trying to understand what they really want for themselves. Talk therapists take note of this book

If you are a traditional talk therapist looking for ways to increase your effectiveness with your clients, check out this book. Don't be fooled by the publisher's emphasis on training for HR professionals. Facilitative Coaching is a gold mine for therapists of all kinds. I am a retired psychotherapist and I wish I had had this book when I was in practice. You don't need to be either an artist or an art therapist to use the ideas in this book. All you need is an adventurous spirit and a desire to help your clients in effective ways.
......And now that I'm retired, I'm using the book myself for my own creative growth and development. It's never too late to learn.

An Organization and Inspiration Smorgasbord

As an Art Therapist and Expressive Arts teacher I have always longed for a text that combines theory and inspiration in an accessible format. Facilitative Coaching strikes just the right balance. Schwarz and Davidson have put their considerable experience into an easy to read, easy to use, format that acts as a springboard to the readers own creativity. Providing just enough theory to shift the readers thinking away from hierarchical modalities toward collaborative and mutual learning, they patiently and consistently encourage the use of language that is effective and empowering. This shift is vital to the effectiveness of the tools offered, and will be a breath of fresh air for those mired in the role of "expert". The simplicity of the tools offered should not be underestimated. Simplicity comes from refining and discarding that which is extraneous. These tools will feel familiar, "with a twist", inspiring confidence and creativity. This text is extremely well organized, and in a sense, models the very style of coaching it teaches. Add to that a splash of humor, and compassion, and I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in the creative process, both personally and professionally.
