Set in this East End of fish and chips and curry, rap clubs and racism--"Many of the shops had metal shutters on their windows and doors to protect them from racist attacks"--Face is the story of Martin Turner and his "gang of three": their reactions when "something terrible" happens to Martin's face. Aimed (probably) at older children and teenagers, the novel skirts allegory. After a night in a local rap club--when Martin has to overcome a certain sense that blacks are "just different"--the (joy)ride accident which destroys his face propels Martin into a world where he has to learn to "deal with other people's prejudices". It's a world of pain, sometimes hatred, which, if anything, Zephaniah underplays here: this is Martin's tale of winning despite the odds. But that discretion may well help to jolt the imagination towards one of the underlying visions of Face: an East End where the white teen boys know they're not going to "get away with a racist remark here". --Vicky Lebeau

Gr. 6-9. Something terrible has happened to Martin's face. An automobile crash and fire have left the handsome, popular 15-year-old boy horribly disfigured. No doubt about it, his life is about to change drastically. How he deals with the changes and their attendant challenges is the subject of this new novel from a British performance artist and poet from Jamaica, and the author of Refugee Boy [BKL Jl 02]. Unfortunately, although the author is clearly passionate about the prejudice and injustice that his protagonist suffers as a result of his disfigurement, he tends to demonstrate it by preaching at his readers and transforming what should be the inherently dramatic into the borderline didactic. To his credit, however, he does an excellent job of animating his setting, the economically disadvantaged, ethnically mixed neighborhoods of East London. Martin's personal growth may lack literary finesse, but his struggle to overcome adversity will still involve some readers. Michael Cart

The story is very interesting but I don't think for everyone! I had to read the book for school and in my opinion it's only a book for persons who had the same accident like Martin, the guy in the book, because the book shows that the life goes on after a bad accident or that you can find new friends and that you're the same person you were before! But never the less it's a book with a good story and some interesting persons but only "good".

It was a nice and realistic story with interesting characters but it wasn't described exciting and it was much too short. So it wasn't bad but I won't read it again.

I think this book is nice, if you read it in your school lessons...
you can also read it at home, 'cause I think it's interesting. And if you like the subject than you may read it.

Nice Story but bad telling

a real nice book
I really liked the story because it's realistic and exctiting. Martin is a very nice character and the others were good described.
