Well written, comprehensive guide

I have been playing around with embellishments on my quilts for the last 4 or 5 years. If I could own only one book on embellishment techniques, this would be it. I actually own a number of such books, but this has quickly become my favorite. It covers a multitude of techniques with clear directions and great color step-by-step pictures. It gives you both preplanned projects and provides a jumping off point for your own designs and creations. If you have ever wondered how to use metal, or silk cocoons, or foiling, or images, or words you've printed on ribbon in your projects - this book covers it all. And the spiral binding makes it especially easy to use. It is one of those special books I am so glad I purchased.

Mediums for all types of materials

When I first looked at the book, I thought there wouldn't be much that I would use as a great part of it pertains to other mediums than I use. After more in-depth reading, I found several ideas that will "translate" to my favorite medium, quilting!
In the general supplies and equipment section, I learned more about stabilizers which will help me in my machine embroidery. You will also find information on fusible web which is great for regular sewing or quilting.
In the projects section, I found out how to create fabric that looks like basket weave and tic-tac-toe tucks. These will make wonderful quilt squares. You can even make "bubble" fabric with a cooling rack, a chop stick and fabric. Of course, there is the traditional crazy quilt block but I learned a new one, called deconstructed crazy quilting. This is similar to crazy quilting but there are raw edges and wild threads.
Thread painting, needle felting, foiling beading, couching stamping are just a few of the mediums I don't usually use but the instructions for creating with these mediums are clear and easy to follow. There are plenty of graphics and even extra tips in colored boxes.
There are two pages about the four authors and a page on where to find the materials used in the book. Best of all, the book is bound with a wire-ring binder so it will lay flat without having to worry about breaking the binding.

Techniques rather than Embellishments

If you are just starting to sew or quilt this will be a helpful book. It is an excellent book for traditional quilters to work through when thy decide they want to make art quilts. If you have sewn/quilted for more than 5 years you will have come across everything in the book. This book starts by having you make a cover for a fabric workbook. Then each page of the book is a sampler of techniques. The first section called Foundations is how to make a background for adding embellishment. If you are a novice and work through and save the samples in your workbook you will have a great reference for future use. Besides making a workbook, you can produce many little craft items and postcards and if you planned it make all the chapters into a wall hangings (art quilts)!
I rated it a 3 as none of the embellishments are new. The book is well designed and illustrated. I would have liked to see more on the construction of the workbook cover and the tab and eyelet finish.
Making the book spiral bound is excellent although the cover is not in the spiral.
