Interesting Setting, but hardly gripping

I bought this book because I was absolutely thrilled by 'Child 44' and the follow-up books. The Stalinist Soviet Union provides a historical background full of every-day insanity and ludicrious influences on the people.
Eastland's attempt to fill this scenery with an interesting story does not really succeed. His narrative style never caught me and -spoiler alert- the idea that Stalin himself would embrace a character like Pekkala in the end did, frankly, strike me as ridiculous.
Tom Rob Smith remains THE author to read for those interested into a thrilling story in an unique historical setting.
