Across the United States, American citizens are forced underground, exiled abroad and separated from their spouses for a surprising reason. Amor and Exile is the story of American citizens—including Veronica, Ben, J.W., and Nicole—who fall in love with undocumented immigrants only to find themselves trapped in a legal labyrinth, stymied by their country’s de facto exclusion of their partners. Journalist Nathaniel Hoffman visited both sides of the border to document the lives of these couples caught in the crossfire of America’s high stakes political fight over immigration. In his disarming and precise style, Hoffman also traces the historical relationship between immigration, love and marriage. Lending an authentic voice to Amor and Exile, coauthor Nicole Salgado delivers a searing first-person account of life in the U.S. with her husband while he was undocumented, her tortured decision to leave the country with him, and their seven years of exile and starting over together in Mexico. Amor and Exile tells of love that transcends borders—a story shared by hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens—cutting through the immigration debate rhetoric and providing a courageous perspective for one of the most vexing policy problems of our time.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Highly recommend this excellent book on immigration and families 6. November 2013
Von laurafern11 - Veröffentlicht auf
This book is close to home for me... I have been in a relationship like those in this book, and now I'm an immigration attorney and thus deal with these issues and these laws all day every day. That said, I am so happy to read reviews of people who have encountered this book and been exposed, for the first time maybe, to the real effects the U.S. immigration laws have on U.S. citizens and families every day.

The book is so well-written, exceptionally accurate in terms of law (this is very impressive, few newspaper articles/essays/writings actually get these complex laws and their applications
so consistently right), and the stories are very representative of the real and common (in this world) situations that people in relationships with undocumented people deal with. Even though I hear these stories all the time, and my life has been immersed in and full of such stories for years now, I still found the book engaging and moving. I hope many, many people outside of this world also find and enjoy this excellent book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Personal twist on the Immigration issue 26. Juli 2013
Von aekdenver - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This riveting book gives the reader a more personal view of the impact of our immigration policies on families. It is an incentive to work harder to make our immigration policies better. Nathaniel and Nicole, the authors, did a terrific job in describing the difficult situations that so many couples in United States face on a day to day basis as they work through their immigration issues. Not many people know how time consuming, expensive, scary, and complicated it is to work through the immigration matrix. This book describes this, and how each situation is different from couple to couple. It is a facinating read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Immigration: Who knew? 28. Juni 2013
Von Mei - Veröffentlicht auf
I found the book to be a compelling read, even for folks like me who are not directly affected by our immigration laws. The writing by Hoffman is precise and written in his personal style that could have been dry and academic, but rather is that of one who has studied the issue in depth to reveal the questions and then suggests answers and thus draws the reader to the subject. Salgado's personal story, while full of drama, sheds real insight into the emotional roller coaster these families ride. The book presents a strong case for reforming our immigration policies.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fresh voices on immigration reform 26. Juni 2013
Von Vida Kenk - Veröffentlicht auf
Amor and Exile relates the true stories of couples consisting of an American citizen and an undocumented immigrant. Love knows no borders, but these lovers are living lives of fear, exile, and separation. There are thousands of couples living under these conditions, but this is the first book to tell their stories. The authors are a journalist (Hoffman) and an energetic and determined young American woman (Salgado) who is currently living in exile in Mexico so that her family can be together.

The style is engaging; I found myself caring deeply about these people. This book is a must-read at this time when immigration reform is being debated in Congress. In fact, the authors raised money in order to distribute a copy to each Senator and Representative.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Poignant travelogue of love stories, with lovers and families on different sides of a border. 13. Mai 2014
Von Stephen Lindenbaum - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Immigration reform is one of today's hottest subjects and Amor and Exile tells the human side of the story. Lovers, families and friends are divided by a border of antiquated laws and out-used prejudices.
Character development is superb as travelers cross a national border and fall in love. What could be more simple? Who doesn't fall in love in Mexico?
It used to be as easy as marriage, but now, with the tangled web of state and national laws and a slow administration, immigration reform is at a standstill.
Immigration laws are languishing in sludge as families on both sides of the border are being destroyed. In Armor & Exile, co-authors Hoffman and Salgado brilliantly show us the consequences.

(I am in a family, AMAZON Prime and this was not written by the name on the account.)
P.S. This gripping tale is enjoyable to read. I also got KINDLE copy for a few dollars more and like the ease of reading a few pages on my iPhone, waiting in-line at the supermarket.
Now looking forward to the third format for books, AUDIBLE. Of course, with the co-authors reading.
I have seen Hoffman and Salgado in person and conference SKYPE-TV and both speak with a lucid, pleasant voice, making them great readers for a great book. Looking forward to the sequel, David
