Über den Autor

David Buss ist Professor für Psychologie an der University of Texas. Zurzeit leitet er dort die Abteilung Individuelle Unterschiede und Evolutionäre Psychologie. Nach seiner Doktorarbeit 1981 an der University of California in Berkeley war er vier Jahre lang Assistant Professor an der Harvard University. 1985 wechselte er an die University of Michigan, wo er elf Jahre lang lehrte, bevor er 1996 dem Ruf an die University of Texas folgte. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die evolutionäre Psychologie menschlicher Paarungsstrategien, Konflikte zwischen den Geschlechtern, Prestige, Status und soziale Reputation, Eifersucht, Mord, Anti-Mordstrategien und Stalking. Seine bahnbrechende Forschung hat ein breites Echo in den Medien erfahren, so etwa in Artikeln in Newsweek, U.S. News&World Report, The New York Times, Washington Post sowie im Spiegel. In deutscher Übersetzung liegen seine Sachbücher Die Evolution des Begehrens und Wo warst Du? Der Sinn der Eifersucht sowie das Lehrbuch Evolutionäre Psychologie vor. Der Spiegel hat im August 2005 (Heft 35/2005) ein längeres Interview zum Thema "Mörder" mit ihm geführt.

Buss has managed to debunk feminist myths, provide psychology students with a firm grasp of Darwinian theory as it applies to human behavior, and entertain the reader in less than 500 brilliantly written pages. As a student of psychology, I continue to be amazed that many refuse to accept the scientific truth and deny the vast amount of empirical support that evolutionary psychology has uncovered. Observing human behavior through the lens of rational, analytical, scientific thought is the only way to truly understand the fascinating "science of the mind." Perhaps some never will accept the truth, relying on the defense mechanism of denial to be able to cope with the harsh reality of human nature, and perhaps some simply aren't cognitively advanced enough to make sense of it all. After all, natural selection does not favor a situation where everyone is of equal cognitive processing ability. There would be no dominance hierarchy if that were the case! But the knowledge gleaned from the study of evolutionary psychology is both fascinating and life-changing, and one who understands and accepts Darwinian theory has a tremendous advantage in life over those who do not. Thanks to Dr. Buss for an entertaining and intellectually stimulating read!

In "Evolutionary Psychology -- The New Science of Mind," David M. Buss delivers a comprehensive, well-detailed, and illustrative presentation of evolved psychological mechanisms that have become universal across the human species while detailing the biology necessary to understand evolutionary theory and how it applies to human psychology. Organizationally-sound, the textbook reads like a novel, clearly providing theoretical and empirical information requisite for a fundamental understanding of Evolutionary Psychology. Buss' volume is essential reading for students of Evolutionary Psychology and very suitable reading for those of us interested in why we are the way we are. For more advanced readers, "The Adapted Mind," edited by Barkow, Cosmides, and Tooby is an ideal choice.

After a century of confusion, psychology as a discipline is finally emerging as a unified science under the evolutionary perspective. This pioneering textbook surveys most of the important research that have been conducted in evolutionary psychology, and every university should have a course based on this textbook. I have no doubt that any subsequent editions of this book will be even more refined and comprehensive. If you want to find out more about yourself, don't confuse yourself with the Freudian unconscious pop psychology stuff. Read this book.
