Everything You Need, the new novel by Scottish writer AL Kennedy, is the story of Nathan Staples, a self-sabotaging, depleted novelist who lives in a writer's colony where he dreams of reunion with his estranged wife, Maura, and his daughter, Mary, who he's not seen for 15 years. Nathan contrives to have Mary, now 19, invited to join the colony where he can mentor her literary progress without telling her who he is. Mary, an independent and open young woman, has been lovingly raised by an extraordinary gay couple and is more than able to withstand Nathan's bullying irascibility and possessive, confused desire. Kennedy brilliantly teases out the dilemmas and dramas of his subterfuge as he attempts to redeem himself. Nathan, Mary and the five other writers are beautifully drawn and their claustrophobic reliance on each other is touching, cruel and true. Kennedy has a delightful ability to stretch words to new effect. The expressive tenderness in her handling of love, loss and recovery is robust, bracing and sometimes quaint. As Nathan teaches Mary how to avoid his mistakes, how to welcome "the anxious flex of ready words", Kennedy is clever to steer clear of the hackneyed dangers of author-prodigy dynamics and swerves into murkier emotional scapes. Despite a baggy middle and an underwriting of Maura, this is a splendid epic tale of the tricky and terrifying demands of love and of writing itself. --Cherry Smyth

Mary Lamb, just starting her adult life, has been offered a scholarship at a writers' community on an island off the coast of Wales. Her upbringing had been pleasant, if unconventional. Her mother, telling her when she was a small child that her father was dead, dropped her off at the home of her uncle and his partner and disappeared, leaving Mary in the capable and loving care of this charming pair. As it turns out, it is a man by the name of Nathan Staples, successful author of thrillers, who is the catalyst that brings her to the island. Staples is, in fact, Mary's father, who hopes they will reestablish contact there. Not writer's block but "teller's block" seems to afflict Nathan, who avoids telling Mary what she needs to know. Life on the island is punctuated by occasional trips to a bizarre London literary scene. The question whether Nathan will tell is basically the only conflict in the tale, but it is strong enough to hold this engaging and sustaining novel together. Danise Hoover

Better Than Paradise

Many reviews for "Paradise" and one lonely voice for "Everything...," what a shame. Exceptional writing, fascinating characters, the antithesis of chick lit, and funny in the blackest sense. Ms. Kennedy's writing makes my brain feel like it's been subjected to a good fire hosing. It's probably not good to have her imagery in my head, but it leaves a lasting impression. Most other novels are ingest-and-forget; you won't forget this book. Thankfully, the lasting impression is not of the Irvine Welsh please-dip-me-in-a-vat-of-acid-so-I-can-feel-clean-again variety. But it is a bracing read.
If you're deciding which of Ms. Kennedy's books to read, do read this book (not that I don't highly recommend "Paradise," I just suggest reading it after this book). The "Editor" character in "Everything" serves as introduction to the "Hannah" character in "Paradise." If you can't stomach him, you won't want to read an entire book on the subject.

Although the length of this book may seem daunting, there is not a superfluous word. Every page holds a gem of a phrase, an idea. This is the first of Kennedy's books that I have read, and it makes me want to read all of them. This book has extreme depths and, in a rare combination, is laugh out loud hilarious. Highly recommended.

I read "Everything You Need" when it came out in 2002, and now nearly a decade later, it remains at the top of my list of very favorite books. Kennedy's writing is exquisite. Her story deep and rich, it cut me to the heart.
