After a bad night at the 24-hour market in Hollywood where he works, Paris Scott finds the Filthy White Guy who just bought a ton of frozen burritos with a hundred-dollar bill (and then destroyed the store's microwave), slumped half-conscious on Scott's rusty 1976 AMC Gremlin. "Paris wasn't a particularly good person," writes John Ridley, "and that was by his own figuring. It's not like he hung around soup kitchens doling out freebies, or gave a damn when dykes were outside Mayfair Market in WeHo collecting money for the AIDS Walk, but he was one of those 'There but for the grace of God' guys; one of those guys that thought if you went out of your way to ignore someone else's bad shit then that same bad shit was liable to boomerang around and smack you in the head at some point." So Paris gives the Filthy White Guy a lift home, and it turns out he's a famous rock star, who repays the favor by calling Paris a loser before passing out. Paris gets even by stealing a tape of the singer's proposed comeback album, an action that might get him killed if the folks who are after the stolen dope that Scott's roommate Buddy took get to him.

Ridley, who writes gritty, critically praised thrillers about Hollywood types who have traded in their dreams of stardom for the reality of survival (Love Is a Racket and Stray Dogs), hates Los Angeles "more than cancer" (as he says in a disclaimer). In Everybody Smokes in Hell, he describes the city with more poetry, passion, and mordant humor than anyone since Nathanael West in Day of the Locust. If you can tolerate the occasional outbursts of racism, sexism, and other non-PC activities, it's a journey worth making. --Dick Adler -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

From Kirkus Reviews

Ridley's either one bad motha of a writer or simply one bad writer. But his stories in any case remain always at a boil and show a rich mastery of black English. Someone gotsta pay because he stolt Daymond's pure package of H and kilt his clocker. That someone is young Paris Scott, who has been working in a Hollywood convenience store. Like Ridleys degenerate gambler, John Stewart, in Stray Dogs (1997) and scriptwriter Jeffty Kittridge in Love Is a Racket (1998), Paris is a born loser unlikely to realize his million-dollar dream even when it drops into his lap. Paris's roommate is Buddy, teenage wheelman for Alfonso, who kills a roomful of mothas while copping Daymond's H, though Alfonso himself takes much lead and dies. Buddy hides the H in a duffel bag under Paris's bed, little knowing that the bag also holds the last works of Ian Jermaine, lead singer and composer for zillion-dollar rock group Will of Instinct. The night before, Paris had saved Filthy White Guy from being rousted and driven him home to his Xanadulike palace in Bel Air. Filthy White Guy turns out to be suicide-hungry Jermaine, eager to fill the legendary footprints of Marilyn, Jimmy Dean, and Jim Morrison. He's just taped his farewell in his home studio, playing all the instruments himself, and actually does go out in a blaze of gloryor, rather, fertilizer. With the tape and the H in his duffel, Paris has four different killers chasing him from Hollywood to Las Vegas. One is Brice, a female assassin whose specialty is deep pain before long-delayed oblivion. ``She had great tits. Real and large. Not mutant-large, just large enough to fit with precision comfort into a man's wide and groping hand. Her two beautiful boobs swelled in an upward curve ending in full nipples that always looked erect. Her tits were the least of her. She was a hell of a woman.'' If you like that, there's plenty moreor even if you dont. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

The way John Ridley writes is like an explosion of moving pictures, vivid and exciting, one take after the next. Everybody Smokes In Hell wasn't a short read, but the fast pace and wild ride make it a weekend read.

THRILL RIDE 8. Februar 2000
Von "lqql"
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
When I finished this book I felt the way you do when you get off a wild rollercoaster - like I'd been whipped around every which way and left with my head spinning. From page one the story gets cranking, stops only for some sly insight, then hits the gas again. This one is fun, fun, fun. If you can take some harsh stuff - and this writer holds nothing back - you'll love this book!

I WANT MORE BRICE 2. Februar 2000

Easily the most exciting character I've stumbled upon in years! In a book full of wild characters moving through an insanely funny story, Brice reigns supreme. Please, Please, Please, can we see Brice again? Soon!

BLOODY AWESOME
Just wild. I don't know if the guy who wrote it was on drugs, or what, but this is one chainsaw of a book. Once it starts, IT DOES NOT LET UP. Lesen Sie weiter...

OUTSTANDING
The term page-turner has become cliche, but it's certainly the only way to describe this book. It starts with a bang and travels like a bullet. Lesen Sie weiter...

A fun, but imitative novel
It's not surprising to learn that Ridley has worked mostly in television and film. This book reads like it was adapted from a screenplay and is very cinematic in it's style. Lesen Sie weiter...

Good Writing -- Poor Story
The critics are correct; Ridley IS a talented writer with a gift for certain character styles. The sad thing about this book is that the wonderful writing is overshadowed by an... Lesen Sie weiter...
