Praise for Raised by Wolves:
"An exceptionally taut read." - Publisher's Weekly

"A great read and a must have." - School Library Journal

"Barnes weaves a fantastic story line full of great plot twists and turns with a little romance sprinkled in. Revealing key pieces of the plot in bits and pieces allows the story to move quickly and effortlessly. Readers will definitely respond to gutsy Bryn, who, in being true to herself, must fight for her place in the world. A great read and a must have for...fans of the supernatural." - School Library Journal

Buchgestaltung

Meinung

In Every Other Day lernen wir Kali kennen.

Oktober 2012
Von C. Echsel
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I am in love with the cover. I must admit that I first picked it up because of the beautiful cover and when I read the summary I knew that I would like the world the author Jennifer Lynn Barnes offers with her book.

I was pulled in the world Kali lives in quite quickly and easily. Right from the start there is a fight going on with hellhounds, although all in all there are not that much fighting scenes where Kali shows off her skills, nevertheless I did not get disappointed with the story.

As for the main characters of the book (Kali, Skylar and Bethany) I liked the protagonist Kali the most, but Skylar’s character drawing was as interesting as Kali’s. Kali has one day supernatural powers and the next day she’s a mere human, that was a nice twist from the supernatural scene. Skylar says of herself that she’s a bit of a psychic. Bethany is one of the popular ones in her highschool, not a character that I liked from the start but she developed nicely in the plot.

The world we find ourselves in is a world where Darwin had discovered a selection of unnatural creatures (like hellhounds, dragons, vampires and zombies) . Their existence has been announced to the population and hunting them is forbidden. Still Kali is hunting them at night when she is in the supernatural mode. She can fight with any weapon and when she picks up a weapon she instantly knows how to use it even if she had used it never before in her life. Cool!

One day in her highschool she finds out that Bethany has a death mark on her body. She decides to rescue her although she is at this day in her human form and therefore weak and vulnerable.

I really liked their progress in the story. I enjoyed that they encountered more than one species along their journey. At times I wished to hear the voice of Lev more often. I liked him.

I had overall a good time with the book and enjoyed the world I was drawn in.

4.0 von 5 Sternen refreshing idea--being fully human one day and then paranormal the next! 20. März 2012
Von Brandi Breathes Books - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This is my first book by Jennifer Barnes, and I was really drawn in by her writing style. This is a refreshing idea--being fully human one day and then paranormal the next! She executed this idea very well, and I also liked that in an parallel universe where paranormal creatures were discovered by Darwin, it is even more strange to not know what exactly she is.
The main character is strong, and selfless, so much its admiral and painful all at the same time. She'd distanced herself from people for so long, but when she tries to save a classmate and gets stuck along the ride with her, along with letting in a social pariah of the school, she realizes just how much she can lose. I enjoyed watching these relationships develop, and I think I was in almost as much pain as Kali at an unfortunate turn that broke my heart.
Skylar is a great secondary character and she made me think of Luna in the Harry Potter series. This innocence and wisdom you can't help but love. And oh her brothers, lol. They appear from everywhere and it was fun how they advanced the plot.
I was very suprised about some of the plot twists, including Zev, Kali's mother, and the story behind her father. The writing is suspenseful and I loved where the story took me.
The ending tied up things pretty well, but I'd still love to read a sequel and find out more about what happens to Kali.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A refreshing YA paranormal heroine 2. Dezember 2011
Von schmettajames - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I read a lot of YA paranormal books, and lately, I've been feeling some fatigue for the genre. I guess I've read one too many books with weak heroines, love at first sight romances, and lame plots. But every once in a while, I find a book that reminds why I actually like this genre. Every Other Day is definitely one of those books.

Kali is a demon hunter. Ever since she reached puberty, she's had an uncontrollable urge to hunt. There's just one catch: she's only a hunter every other day. On her off days, she's a normal human teenager. Her hunting activities don't leave time for a social life, and she's a loner. On one of her human days, she realizes that a demon has targeted a fellow student, and she takes it upon herself to save the girl, even though she's lacking her superstrength and awesome healing abilities at the time. Her decision sets off a chain of events that throw her life into disarray and eventually lead to her uncovering the mystery of what she really is.

I won't say anything more about the plot since I don't want to give too much away, but it's a fast-moving story with almost constant action. One plot twist I saw coming, but others were surprises. Kali is a great character. She's a tough loner, and she's been dealing with her secret life completely on her own for several years. When she makes a decision to save another girl, it forces her to actually deal with people and relationships, which are very foreign territory for her. The secondary characters are well developed. Perky outcast Skylar, who decides that Kali needs a friend and refuses to take no for an answer, and popular cheerleader Bethany, who turns out not to be the stereotypical mean girl she seems to be at first, both felt real to me.

I love that Kali is a strong heroine, and I really like that there isn't a romance. There's some slight potential for one, but that's not the focus of the book at all, and I found that a refreshing change from most paranormal PA books. I don't know if this is the first book in the series, but I really hope there are more. It comes to a conclusion (no cliffhangers here), but there's a lot the author could do with future books.

5.0 von 5 Sternen It's not Buffy the Vampire Slayer! 28. Dezember 2011
Von Amber M. Anderson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I really enjoyed reading this!

But everyone who I talked to who read the description (including myself) said "oh, it sounds like Buffy the Vampire Slayer". It certainly is not.

Kali is a partial human in a world in which paranormal creatures have been discovered to live among humans creating an alternate history for our world (these creatures go well back in time including references to Lewis Carrol and the Civil War). Although they are largely predatory and dangerous, most of them are considered endangered species...Kali knows better and is driven by her less than human side to hunt them.

However, she lives a circadian cycle - one day she's a strong supernatural hunter, the next she's an ordinary weak human girl. Her past is a mystery to her and she has few friends and only minimal conversation with her father. No one knows about her and she doesn't know why she is the way she is either.

It gets interesting when Kali attempts to save a girl on one of her human days and finds out that in doing so she's suddenly found herself with friends for the first time as well as entering a new stage in her evolution and having an opportunity to find out more about what she is. The action is fast and furious, and the story is detailed and rich. Lots of fights and flights and humor and angst.

I have to say that when I get books through the Vine program they are free to me and while I enjoy them, I wouldn't always have paid for them full price. In this case, I liked this book so much I intend to buy the next in the series when it comes out! It might be young adult, but this was just a lovely read...

2.0 von 5 Sternen Review from Esther's Ever After 24. Januar 2012
Von Brenna - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The first thing that grabbed me with the book was the description. A girl with natural predatory and hunter instincts that take over every other day? I was dying of curiousity to know what she was and why she was drawn to act that way.

But unfortunately, Every Other Day didn't interest me as much as I had hoped, and most of its revelations did very little to satisfy my inital curiousity.

Reasons to Read:

1.Full of twists and unexpected turns:

Yes, I did just say that that I was unimpressed (for the most part) with the twists and revelations as they unfolded. HOWEVER, there were so many in the book that I couldn't help but end up surprised by the ending. And it was those last few chapters that really grabbed me and held my attention, because the book didn't end up being as predictable as it seemed to be while I was reading it.

2.Romance takes the backseat:

It really can be refreshing to read a book with minimal romance, and although I feared at first that there was going to be (yet again) some forced love triangle, I'm so pleased to say that it did not develop that way at all. Romance is barely there, and if I'm being totally honest it isn't really there at all. There's some potential interest and chemistry, but it isn't the driving force of the plot.
But overall, it fell flat for me and didn't meet my expectations like I had hoped it would. I was looking forward to something new and unexpected, but it ended up being more predictable and common.

And I was completely confused by the lack of backstory to this one. Such little information was given to the setting of the story, and it took me a while to figure out that the preternatural occurences and creatures were actually common knowledge. Go figure. Yet at the same time, no one really had a clue as to what to do about it. Nothing irked me as much about this book as the lack of explanation here did.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome concept, awkward delivery 29. November 2011
Von The Compulsive Reader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I loved the concept of this book right off the bat. A girl who becomes a Buffy-like character and defeats evil creatures and kicks butt one day...but then is morphed back into a normal, weak teenage girl every other day? That's interesting. And of course, it gets even more interesting when she finds a girl she must save in less than 24 hours...while she is a normal teen girl.

Barnes' style, however, was just a little too rough for me. Her use of one sentence paragraphs to create drama within her narrative is fine...in moderation. When three or four of those were appearing every page, they lost their dramatic effect and became annoying rather quickly. Other word choices and mechanics just really bugged me, and make what otherwise could have been a very intriguing book very hard to read.
