2.0 von 5 Sternen Angel Romance with severe flaws! 25. Februar 2013
Von Johanna
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I was so looking forward to starting a new series on angels since it was also my last book in the Paranormal Reading Challenge for February.
Yet, I was deeply disappointed by this one. I'm kind of glad that it was a freebie because I'm not sure whether it would be worth any money at all.

First of all, the plot. It has a lot of potential, angel story where there are several fractions of angels with different abilities. But the plot was more than just 'nice' and the potential unfortunately wasted. I didn't feel any of it, not even the evil part. There's lot's of talking about all the dangers and the threat to Skyla's life, but in the end only one murder attempt was made and it didn't feel that dangerous.
One of Skyla's and Logan's ability (them being both Celestras) was mind-reading. But they only seemed to used it on each other whenever they felt like it. Nothing too exciting here, either.
The problem with the plot is that it doesn't develop AT ALL. It just jumps from one conclusion to another. There are even big gaps. I mean Skyla sees Logan one time, thinks he is hot and that's it... they're a couple. Soon after, she throws the L-word around. Very very, way too often I turned the page to a new chapter, read a few lines, looked up and thought 'Huh? Did I miss something?'.
Example: Logan takes Skyla on a trip, he describes the place that he wants to go to her in great detail. I can already picture it and am curious what they will do there. Then, there is an incident on their way to this place. Chapter break. Skyla is at home.
This should give you a hint as to how full of huge, gaping holes the plot is.

Secondly, the characters. Skyla is supposed to be good-looking but I couldn't describe her a bit right now.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Being Skyla isn't easy... 11. April 2012
Von TheSibra
Format:Kindle Edition
This series is something else. Skyla, a high school student, moves to Paragon island and discovers that there is a whole world of supernaturals out there and that she is one of them! But this world is on the brink of war and there is no way of knowing who the enemy is. Unless, of course, you agree to start a new race of supernatural beings with the Sector Marshall, aka the local maths teacher, by becoming his lover. But who would do that, when Gage, the nephew of Skyla's new boyfriend, Logan, tells her that he can see the future and that she's going to marry him instead. Maybe it's time to think about resurrecting his old girlfriend Chloe and dig up her grave? At least she seemed to be a nice girl on Skyla's time travels to the past!

This series is well written, creative, hilarious, deeply absurd and full of shocking turns of events.

I enjoyed reading books 1-6 so far, the only major flaw that has to be mentioned, is that actually almost none of the big questions and mysteries get resolved in these 6 books. There are great scenes, surprising twists, but in the end of each book you feel like nothing much has changed. That can be a bit frustrating.

I still give it 5 well deserved stars.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Seriously? 29. Juli 2011
Von Onmykindle - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I bought this book based on the slew of 5 star reviews left for it. After reading the Etheral, I'm left wondering how that's possible (though I have a theory.)

One review said the book read like fanfiction and, having written and edited in that world for ten years, I'd like to qualify it with "it reads like *bad* fanfiction." I've read some incredible fanworks over the years and this doesn't come close to that level of quality.

There's no cohesion in the plot, no follow through on plot devices use (Skyla finds out her mother's an angel, yet there's no confrontation?), other story elements are so contrived as to be almost comical - insta-lust to Logan, falling literally into Chloe's life - her room, her boyfriend, her cheerleading squad - and no one finds this strange. Skyla routinely "forgets" that Logan can read her thoughts? Doubtful, since she's had that ability her whole life.

The names. Skyla. Darla.

The story jumps around, the pacing is shoddy and there's no real sense of beginning, middle, and end.

Skyla herself is vapid and shallow, almost totally unlikeable. Logan is a complete dog - making out in front of Skyla to "get Chloe's diary" when, I'm assuming, Gage could teleport into Michelle's room if he wanted to and get it for Logan?

To this point, Gage is the only redeeming character and probably the only reason I've given the book 2 stars and not one.

We won't even get into the spelling and grammar errors throughout. That would take several more pages.

I'm intrigued enough to see if she grows as an author through the next books (at .$99 I'll take the risk.)

1.0 von 5 Sternen Reads like bad fanfiction... 29. September 2011
Von Kala - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I am glad I only paid 99 cents for this book because it's barely worth that. I'm the type of person to dig into a book and no stop reading until it's done. I read 400 page books in a matter of hours, but this book took me four days to get through. The characters are really 2-dimensional and undeveloped. The main character is unlikeable and boring. The book has extremely short, choppy chapters which remind me of really bad fanfiction. The plot jumps around so quickly I often lost focus and had to backtrack and figure out what was going on.

*** spoilers below ***

The book starts off with the main character, Skyla, moving to Paragon Island. Skyla describes herself as perfect with wavy blonde (NEVER FRIZZY!!) hair and perfect crystal blue eyes. She moves into a house where a girl who was murdered lived. The dead girl's best friend immediately runs over and becomes best friends with Skyla for some unknown reason. She also gets Skyla an instant spot on the cheerleading squad and instant invites to all parties (and there are a lot.. this girl parties like a college kid). The new best friend also immediately starts dating Skyla's nose-picking, flatulent, disgusting brother as well. Right away, Skyla meets the dead girl's boyfriend, Logan, and his cousin Gage. The two boys are described as the most perfect good looking boys in the world and both immediately fall in love with her and start fighting over her. There is absolutely no development of a relationship, Skyla and Logan just immediately are in love and start making out all the time. This author definitely wastes no time on buildup for that first kiss, they're making out on a pool table within pages of meeting.

I kind of liked the whole Skyla and Logan can both read each other's minds thing, but it's very poorly done. They only read each other's minds when it's convenient and their mind reading is just an unspoken conversation. There was so much potential here for all sorts of awkwardness and awesomeness that just never happened. The mind reading is nothing more than a rarely used gimmick that only comes up when the author wants the two characters to speak to each other privately.

Logan knows that they're all angels/angel offspring/whatever, but decides that Skyla doesn't need to know this until he's ready to tell her, despite the fact that there are tons of monsters and bad people out to kill her. The holding out seems like a poor attempt to draw things out and create suspense where there is none. So they make out a lot, never develop a real relationship, and eventually he spills the beans in a convoluted tale that never amounts to anything. These big bad guys chasing them only appear a few times during the story. The rest of the time, Skyla is partying and whining about Logan (who is off making out with some other chick to get his dead ex-girlfriend's diary). Oh, and making out with Gage because apparently it's okay for Skyla to make out with her boyfriend's cousin.

Time travel. It's another power these angelspawn have that is used randomly as a plot device. Skyla randomly decides to time travel in order to pick a fight with the dead ex-girlfriend because she's jealous. She has no concern or care for the fact that the dead ex-girlfriend was tortured and murdered and left in a ditch. That doesn't matter. All that matters is her jealousy over Logan having a previous relationship with this girl.

I could go on and on, but it's pointless. I don't recommend this book. There are so many other great paranormal/scifi young adult books out there (Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices, Hunger Games, etc) - don't bother with this one!!

1.0 von 5 Sternen The concept was intereting, actual book was unenjoyable 28. August 2012
Von Michelle @ In Libris Veritas - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This is another Kindle freebie that I've hoarded away and finally got around to reading. I initially started it because of a few fellow bloggers saying that they really enjoyed it, and my hopes were high. So I feel back into the 'angel pattern' that I have and I've been hoping to break. I see great reviews, those I know enjoy it, I start reading...and disappointment. I'm starting to think I'm too picky when it comes to these things, I'm not entirely sure why me and angel books are so incompatible. I love angels and see a ton of potential both in the creature and in this story, but it seems to never come to fruition.

I struggled to come up with a rating on this one, so it truly floats around a 1.5 or 2. The plot is fairly good and has a nice unique feel to it, however I'm not sure the actual execution did it justice. I like the idea of having Nephilim descendents running about, and I love the fact that they have a kind of cast structure based on ability. There are the Countenance, Noster, Levatio, Deorsum, and Celestra. They each have their defining characteristics which are pretty numerous and they kind of overlap on one another. The most ineresting of the powers are time travel and 'the knowing' which is just future sight. I had no clue that time travel was going to be involved in this and while it was kind of cool, the main character really brought it down for me. Not very much is explained in this as a whole, you do find out about the angels and you find out that they have enemies...but you never find out what exactly is going on and why.

The characters in this were really frustrating and to be frank, idiots. Skyla is the main character and while she does have some wit when it comes to verbal exchanges she really seems to have trouble with really obvious things. It was just one stupid thing after another and it had me really irritated. So many things could have been avoided if she would have taken a few minutes to think about it and ask herself if it was a good idea...or maybe that's why she didn't because the answer would have always been no. Breille is the instant best friend...there is little to lead up to why these two would hit it off merely minutes after meeting but they do. Gage and Logan are pretty interesting but they are also 'perfect'. I find Logan to be a tad smarter than Skyla but not by much, and while Gage is not as over bearing as Logan he is a bit puppy doggish. No matter what the these three do to each other, it's always forgiven and brushed over. There are also the inevitable high school enemies that Skyla obtains and that is pretty instantaneous as well. No one in this book ever takes the time to get to know anyone they just are. The whole plot involving a girl named Chloe was interesting but the one part of her story that I wanted to know more about was never even touched.

Overall I wasn't really impressed with this, there was a lot of potential and it failed to deliver. I'm glad others have enjoyed this but it simply was not for me. I won't be purchasing the next book but if it ever becomes free I might download it just to see if it improves.

This series was recommended for those that like Amanda Hocking. I figured that I would give it a try for such a cheap price. The reviews also seemed to be extremely positive. Upon starting this book, I felt extremely confused. There is absolutely no plot or character development what-so-ever! You are immediately thrown into a choppy story that reads from the perspective of a vapidly shallow teen who hates her family.

The version I downloaded even had entire blank pages mid-chapter only making the story even less professionally written. I would equate this writing to a high school freshman's rough draft. There is no editing, no fleshing out of characters or story lines. I'm sure there is a good story in there somewhere, but honestly, the quality is nowhere near there for publication. There needs to be some serious focus on fluidity and cohesion. It seems unfortunate that something so unpolished and under-developed was given such high reviews...they are misleading!

I agree with others. This book is choppy. The plot is difficult to follow because actions stop abruptly. Characters are not developed. I can't understand how this was published.
