I'm using two guidebooks to help me plan my trip for next month: this book and the Eyewitness Guide. The pictures in the latter are great and helped me get a better sense of the sights, but you can't actually plan a trip with it. The Lonely Planet guide has a wealth of practical information and reviews that have helped me set an itinerary, pick hotels/hostels, and figure out how I am going to get around to everything. I also appreciate the historical and cultural information on each country, the section on Helsinki (which Eyewitness does not have!), and the language tips. This is why the Lonely Planet guide is the only one I will actually be bringing with me when I travel.

Captures the cultures

This is a very helpful book that does a good job of capturing the cultures: Song festivals, traditional clothing, local foods, and rural ways of life are outlined. If you go to one of these countries, you will feel prepared if you examine the book before going. Also, it is up to date, such as the Euro for Estonia. The pictures are very beautiful and focus on urban, rurual, new, and old.

A couple months ago, I made a plan to spend 8 days between Helsinki and the Baltic States and this guide couldn't have been any better. I now feel like I could have spent a week or two in each of them with all the various gems they described. I especially enjoyed their historical perspective in each country and how they enabled me to make a doc that I was able to check with friends. Really excited for this trip and would recommend this guide to anyone.
