Escape society: that's been the motivating dream of books from Henry David Thoreau's Walden to Alex Garland's The Beach but in Herbert Ypma's Hip Hotels: Escape it's not just a dream. Interior design expert (and author of Hip Hotels: City) Ypma tracks down photographs and meticulously records over 40 hotels around the world that will, in his opinion, provide a real escape from the pressures of modern life.

For some, escape means roughing it in nature--climbing a mountain, trekking with a backpack. Ypma's idea of escape is more sophisticated. The best escape locations, he writes, "amplify the attractions of their setting" and enable us to recognise "man's ability to enhance the beauty of a beautiful place." It's no surprise, then, that the hotels Ypma chooses don't have the conventional feel of a Hilton or Sheraton; many are family-run and all are unique. At Amandari, on Bali, guests don't get a room, they get a house positioned along walkways that echo the arrangement of a traditional Balinese village. At the Ice Hotel in Sweden, glasses and beds are literally made out of ice. It's important to the author that the hotels he describes have been constructed with ecological sensitivity: most, like the log cabins of Dunton Hot Springs in Colorado, are built from local materials and their food and design reflect local culture.

The hotels are listed in alphabetical order by country. Addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and room rates (in local currencies) are provided. Despite their relatively small sizes, France, Great Britain, and Italy get the most attention; combined they have 13 hotels to North America's five, South America's two and Australia's one. Ympa's luscious, detailed photographs accompany equally descriptive text that's rich in cultural detail and literary reference (Carey on Australia, Chatwin on Chile). The author has a habit of mentioning the stars, actors, media and entertainment types who have vacationed at each hotel. This may grate some nerves but it also points to a shift in travel patterns; as travel becomes less exclusive, it's not only the stars who get the chance to combine luxury with environmental awareness in their choice of escape destinations. --Tamsin Todd

Pressestimmen

"Hotels so stunning, so individual, so undeniably designer destinations in their own right."

I got this book as present from the owner of one the resorts featured by Ypma. Its true that a picture can paint a thousand word. This book is a beautiful compilation of some of the most breathtaking locations in the world. Some of the visuals also provide interior-decorating ideas. After all, the writer is founder of the award-winning Interior Architecture and creator of the best-selling World Design series. If I'm an owner of a resort, I'd want him to feature my property the way he does it here. The places featured may offer 'out-of-this -world luxury' but ONLY if one can afford it. If paradise is the aim in every respect, there are many more beautiful and 'Highly Individual Places' that are more accessible. I would not recommend this book as the ultimate vacation guide, only the perfect coffee-table item.

hip hotels city is way better (although a new version of all the new hotels would be greatly appreciated). this version, i was expecting, was to be great spa-type places to go and get pampered. instead, it seemed that most were "rundown is charming." i may use two of the places in the book, but other than that, it was just a good read on the subway home. herbert would do us all happy if he'd do another cities version, complete with all the way hip new places opening up all over the world.

A symphony of colors and true escape locations. The text is entertaining and the 45 hotels featured are truly inspirational. A great help for planning the next holiday!

The book is basically a gathering of exotic hotel panflets that are pasted in a book that delivers few pictures and fewer information on the hotels. All the places in the book are great but it leaves you longing for much more info and even more pictures..not very helpful trip planner. PS- It looks like someone had a great free vacation all around the world and all he got was this stupid book.....sorry but its true!

Pretty good but could be a lot better 2. April 2005

This book profiles around 45 luxury hotels throughout the world. Some of the hotels featured include Vatulele in Fiji, Pangkor Laut in Malaysia and Soneva Fushi in the Maldives. Due to the format of the book, I found the pictures to be small. Some entries include only 4 pictures of the hotel which really is not enough. Overall, it is ok. Anyone interested in this type of book should check out The Hotel Book: Great Escapes series by Taschen. This series focuses on luxury hotels in Asia, Africa, and Europe and the pictures are outstanding.

Ultimate Coffee Table Book, but how do you book? 29. Mai 2002

Mr. Ypma is a gifted photographer and a careful writer - a rare combination. Great selection of hotels. It is the perfect coffee table version of cool new online services such as the great "tablethotels.com" which also work as a trip planner.
Eye Candy that's Smooth, Sophisticated and Sweet 7. Januar 2007

I really enjoyed this installment of Hip Hotels. As expected, the pictures are yummy enough to qualify as "gourmet eye candy". But, to me, it's Ypma's commentary that really steals the show: The writing is served up for those in-the-know and flavored with a perspective that's both witty and inviting.

JUST THE BOOK I WAS LOOKING FOR WITH GREAT PICTURES IN THE BAHAMAS AND BALI, MUSTIQUE, ETC. THE BOOK IS A VACATION IN ITSELF. WORTH THE MONEY.
