Point taken that some the recipes in this little booklet are lovely, there are not pictures and the whole thing seems to ahve been thrown together quite heartlessly.

Small booklet (roughly 5 x 7 inches) of 47 pages with metric conversion on inside back flap, although you don't need to know metric to use the recipes. This is one of a collection of over 70 titles in the traditional fare series by J. Salmon publishing. There are 11 sepia reproductions of paintings of English landmarks and historical English life . There are no photographs or illustrations of the finished recipes. The book is put together like a travel memento. It's sentimental in a charming way. A bit of authentic England from yesteryear. It is important to realize that the recipes are from the UK, and there are differences in measurements compared with the US. For example, a pint is 20 ounces in the UK and 16 ounces in the US. Also, a kitchen scale is essential, as most dry ingredients are measured in ounces.
There are also a few differences in ingredients. Caster sugar is simply very fine white sugar, and ordinary table sugar works just as well. Mixed spice is roughly the equivalent of pumpkin pie spice. Demerara sugar is very large crystals of sugar sometimes found in the US as a decoration on muffins. It can readily be found in the baking section of the supermarket. Lots of short recipes for teatime delights! No food photos in the book, but there are a lot of black and white drawings of cottages and things between the recipes. Nice book for yourself or as a gift, especially for tea lovers and/or anglophiles!

This little book is very small (4x6 inches) but it adds to its abundant charm. With 34 traditional recipes, about one on every page, and little notes on each recipe's history, I am happy to say it is a great addition to my expansive cookbook collection. Arrived in perfect condition well before the estimated delivery date. As one reviewer had noted, there are no food images, but there are black and white illustrations scattered throughout the pages. Adorable little book for sure!
