The 14th-century knight lived in a century of change, in terms of both recruitment methods and the appearance of fighting men. This book describes all aspects of the knight's life, including his training in the castle yard and the hard knocks of tournaments. The knight's daily routine on campaign is explored along with the role of mercenary knights, the motivation of knights in the field and the influence of chivalry. The book is beautifully illustrated with eight colour plates by Graham Turner covering all aspects of knighthood in this period and also includes photographs of rare surviving contemporary pieces of armour.

This Osprey warrior title deals with the warrior elite of 14th Century England. These were the men who formed the English vanguard at such battles as Bannockburn, Crecy, and Poitiers, and helped to inspire the modern stereotype of the chivalrous jousting knights.
The author, Christopher Gravett, has contributed a number of titles on the Middle Ages to Osprey. His works include the warrior title on the Vikings and the men-at-arms titles on medieval Germany. He has also written the companion titles to this one, English Medieval Knight 1200-1300 and 1400-1500. Graham Turner is established as an expert artist specializing in the Middle Ages.
The book opens with an introduction to the military history of 14th Century England, and a useful chronology of the key battles and events of the century. Next it takes a rather bland look at the origins and recruitment of knights, which is followed by a more interesting section on a young knight's education and training.
Perhaps the most useful part of the book examines the armor and weaponry of 14th Century knights in great detail, making the names of the various armor styles in bold for easier recognition. Armor for the horse, and the knight's fabric clothing are also discussed under this section. Following are sections on chivalry, tournaments, and the knight's experience of war. A bibliography, detailed glossary, and plate commentary follow.
The plates are, as typical, eight in number. They depict, respectively, an English Knight c. 1330, young squires training, a horse and riding gear, a smith at work, a knight c. 1350, knights at a mine in France, c. 1360, a tournament towards the end of the period, and a knight c. 1390. They are all highly detailed and very colorful.
Overall this is a good source on the English Medieval Knight c. 1300-1400, serving as an excellent introduction to the casual reader in particular.
