Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.co.uk

It's not easy being NYPD detective Lincoln Rhyme, the world's foremost criminologist. First of all, he's a quadriplegic. Secondly, he's forever being second-guessed and mother-henned by his ex-model-turned-cop protégé, Amelia Sachs, and his personal aide, Thom. And thirdly, it seems that he can't motor his wheelchair around a corner without bumping into one crazed psycho-killer after another.

In The Empty Chair, Jeffery Deaver's third Rhyme outing--after 1997's The Bone Collector and 1998's The Coffin Dancer--Rhyme travels to North Carolina to undergo an experimental surgical procedure and is, a jot too coincidentally, met at the door by a local sheriff, the cousin of an NYPD colleague, bearing one murder, two kidnappings, and a timely plea for help. It seems that 16-year-old Garrett Hanlon, a bug-obsessed orphan known locally as the Insect Boy, has kidnapped and probably raped two women, and bludgeoned to death a would-be hero who tried to stop one of the abductions.

Rhyme sets up shop, Amelia leads the local constabulary (easily recognised by their out-of-joint noses) into the field, and, after some Holmesian brain work and a good deal of exciting cat-and-mousing, the duo leads the cops to their prey. And just as you're idly wondering why the case is coming to an end in the middle of the book, Amelia breaks the boy out of jail and goes on the run. Equally convinced of the boy's guilt and the danger he poses to Amelia, Rhyme has no choice but to aid the police in apprehending the woman he loves--no easy task, as she's the one human being who truly knows the methods of Lincoln Rhyme.

Rhyme's specialty combines the minute scientific analysis of physical evidence gathered from crime scenes and his arcane knowledge of, it would seem, every organic and inorganic substance on earth. Deaver combines engaging narration, believable characters, and his trademark ability to repeatedly pull the rug out from under the reader's feet. Lincoln Rhyme's back all right, and the smart money's betting that his run has just begun.

A Rip-Roaring Read 9. Juni 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Quadriplegic criminologist, Lincoln Rhyme, is back in a can't-put-it-down story with more twists than a slinky toy. Seems Lincoln, in North Carolina to undergo a highly experimental and risky surgical procedure that might give him more mobility, is talked into assisting the locals in finding a troubled, insect loving teen aged boy who killed another teenager and kidnapped two women. The teen, dubbed "Insect Boy" by the folks who live in his small town, has been wonderfully depicted by Deaver. The insect lore is quite fascinating, as are the forensic deductions made by Rhyme from his observations of trace physical evidence taken from the primary and secondary crime scenes. I liked Deaver's portrayal of the women in the story as strong and resourseful, rather than helpless victims. He's very good at developing characters the reader can understand and emphathize with. And the plot is a roller coaster ride of action and suspense. Just when it seems over, it heats up again, and takes off on a new tangent. I have only one complaint, and that is that the locals are portrayed just a little too red-necky for my taste. Otherwise it's a fine thriller that is guaranteed to keep you reading.

Vintage Deaver! 23. Juli 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
After Deaver's recent outstanding novels "The Devil's Teardrop" and "The Coffin Dancer" I thought it couldn't possibly get any better - WRONG! "The Empty Chair" is just excellent! At the beginning you think, what can a hunt for a killer and kidnapper in some North Carolina woods lead to? Of course that hunt was just the beginning of a tense, page-turning thriller with twists and turns galore that will keep you up all night. I started reading the book on one day at noon and couldn't put it away until I finished reading it the other day at 8 a.m. in the morning without having slept (luckily it was a weekend). I highly recommend this book to everyone and I already waiting for the next book of the great "Puzzle-Master" Jeffery Deaver!

While I must admit that the entire insect thing was not all that interesting to me, once again Jeffery Deaver has managed to create a magnificent piece of literature. Nobody spins a web of mystery quite like him and takes a reader on more of a rollercoaster ride. Just when you think you have it all figured out, something else comes out of the woodwork. There is a simple word for that: SUSPENSE, and Deaver is a master of it.

not as good as the first two books
I really waited for this book - the first Lincoln-Rhyme-novels are two of my favourites. This one isn't bad, but I didn't find it as convincing as the others. Lesen Sie weiter...

Jeffery Deaver is amazing!
While the twists and turns in this fast-paced story are sometimes a wee bit stretched, the story, the familiar characters, and the surprises are up to Deaver's very high standards. Lesen Sie weiter...
