Maurice Sendak calls Eloise a "brazen, loose-limbed little monster." Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Quindlen finds her pathetic and lonely. Eloise gave Vanity Fair writer Marie Brenner "permission to rebel." Anyone who has been introduced to the eccentric 6-year-old who spends her days at large in New York's Plaza Hotel pouring water down the mail chute and managing her self-imposed responsibilities is fascinated, fascinated, fascinated. She is the only girl we know who feeds her turtle raisins and braids his ears, wears Kleenex boxes on her head (they make very good hats), and gets away with everything. Even if you have seven copies of the original Eloise, you may want to add The Absolutely Essential Eloise to your collection. In addition to the full splendor of the original 65-page Eloise story, this special edition includes an 18-page scrapbook, written by Marie Brenner, with "photographs of Miss Kay Thompson when she was young and fabulous and rawther like Eloise" and never-before-seen photographs, memorabilia, and sketches and stories from illustrator Hilary Knight. Anyone who adores Eloise and is intrigued by her talented creators should have this book within easy reach. (Click to see a sample spread. Copyright 1955, renewed 1983 by Kay Thompson. Kay Thompson was absolutely right when she called this a book "for precocious adults." I bought copies for my nephews and almost immediately returned the books when I discovered they were far too long to read as a bedtime story. The situational humor would be far, far over their 4-year-old heads. Too many inside jokes, characterizations targeted at adults, and illustrations that are too blah to really be engaging. Not a keeper.

Eloise lives with her nanny, dog, and turtle in The Plaza Hotel in New York City. She knows that the modern six-year-old has to keep moving in order to get the full potential for fun each day from a busy hotel . . . especially when your mother knows The Owner. Between investigating, racing, and helping, she covers The Plaza from top to bottom. And if you visit the hotel, you'll see her picture just off the lobby on the 58th Street side.

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Eloise was one of her picks.

Our daughter's mother and I often have meetings in The Plaza, and sometimes stay overnight there. On one trip, we bought this book in the gift shop and had Eloise sign it for our daughter before we left. Eloise wrote, "Sorry I missed you Hope to see you next trip Love, Eloise" Every time we went to New York with our daughter when she was six, we looked for Eloise but we kept missing her. It was lucky that her picture was always there to greet us.

After our daughter could read, we would encourage her to read this book while we were away at The Plaza. In that way, she could feel like she was with us.

Then when we went on trips, we would ask her what she would like to do in the hotel.

During my first visit to the Plaza Hotel I noticed the painting near the lobby, when I asked who is was of, the shocked answer was "Eloise, of course! Haven't you ever read that book?" Of course I ran right out and purchased a copy. I loved it and raced home from New York to share it with my children, who were familiar with the Plaza through the movie Home Alone 2. It is now one of their favorite books. They want to be Eloise and live in a hotel and run all over it. I don't blame them, everytime I visit the Plaza I think of that little girl and wish I could follow her on her travels and adventures. Someone at the Plaza told me that Eloise was based on Liza Minelli when she was young and her mother Judy Garland lived at the Plaza. I don't know if that is true or not, but it's fun to think so! Thank you Kay Thompson for bringing out the imp in me evertime I think of Eloise!

I have loved Eloise since my sister gave me "Eloise at Christmastime" when I was a child. Even though I am now 40-something, I still read both "Eloise" and "Eloise at Christmastime" frequently. These books must be savored slowly. All illustrations by the fabulous Hilary Knight must be viewed with an appreciative eye for detail. Only then can one completely come to truly know and love Eloise's delightful, true personality. "Eloise" is the only one of four books that are still in print. I give her to my closest friends as a gift from my heart. I do not own, nor have I ever had the pleasure of reading "Eloise in Moscow" and "Eloise in Paris", as they, along with "Eloise at Christmastime" are, sadly, no longer in print. It is my one desire, to someday locate these two books, and possess them, too, for my very own.

This book has been a favorite of mine for a long time now, ever since it first caught my eye on the shelf of a store. Kay Thompson's imaginative little girl, who tells precisely that she is six, and that she is "ELOISE", is so mischievous but immediately likeable; but credit also goes to Hilary Knight, for I cannot imagine a better drawn character for Eloise. Ms.Knight somehow just somehow manages to capture the essence of her, and I admire her for that.
Although I'am now 14, I still re-read the book when it's a rainy day or when I need to smile. Eloise brightens up my life, and I'am ever so grateful to my mom for buying it for me!!
If you haven't read Eloise, you don't know what you're missing out on, and I suggest that you hurry up and read it!!

I was given this book as a child. It is still one of my favorites that I own. I bought a new Eloise for my older daughter, who passed it onto her little sister. This is a story of a little girl, Eloise, who lives at the Plaza Hotel with her nanny. She has a very vivid imagnation and is quite an actress. Her adventures in a single day can leave the reader with panges of envy. If only I could do what she does and get away with it. Her nanny fits into the role of a "I missed the boat" of becoming a Mary Poppins graduate. Still you have to love her because you know she really loves Eloise. Sit back and enjoy the ride,
the elevator ride of course. It will keep you busy for a good 20 minutes. This book will be read more than once. I guarantee it.....
