Maurice Sendak calls Eloise a "brazen, loose-limbed little monster." Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Quindlen finds her pathetic and lonely. Eloise gave Vanity Fair writer Marie Brenner "permission to rebel." Anyone who has been introduced to the eccentric 6-year-old who spends her days at large in New York's Plaza Hotel pouring water down the mail chute and managing her self-imposed responsibilities is fascinated, fascinated, fascinated. She is the only girl we know who feeds her turtle raisins and braids his ears, wears Kleenex boxes on her head (they make very good hats), and gets away with everything. Even if you have seven copies of the original Eloise, you may want to add The Absolutely Essential Eloise to your collection. In addition to the full splendor of the original 65-page Eloise story, this special edition includes an 18-page scrapbook, written by Marie Brenner, with "photographs of Miss Kay Thompson when she was young and fabulous and rawther like Eloise" and never-before-seen photographs, memorabilia, and sketches and stories from illustrator Hilary Knight. Anyone who adores Eloise and is intrigued by her talented creators should have this book within easy reach. (Click to see a sample spread. Copyright 1955, renewed 1983 by Kay Thompson. 5.0 von 5 Sternen Farewell to a beloved author 13. Juli 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
During my first visit to the Plaza Hotel I noticed the painting near the lobby, when I asked who is was of, the shocked answer was "Eloise, of course! Haven't you ever read that book?" Of course I ran right out and purchased a copy. I loved it and raced home from New York to share it with my children, who were familiar with the Plaza through the movie Home Alone 2. It is now one of their favorite books. They want to be Eloise and live in a hotel and run all over it. I don't blame them, everytime I visit the Plaza I think of that little girl and wish I could follow her on her travels and adventures. Someone at the Plaza told me that Eloise was based on Liza Minelli when she was young and her mother Judy Garland lived at the Plaza. I don't know if that is true or not, but it's fun to think so! Thank you Kay Thompson for bringing out the imp in me evertime I think of Eloise!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Eloise will always be one of my favorite people. 22. Dezember 1997
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I have loved Eloise since my sister gave me "Eloise at Christmastime" when I was a child. Even though I am now 40-something, I still read both "Eloise" and "Eloise at Christmastime" frequently. These books must be savored slowly. All illustrations by the fabulous Hilary Knight must be viewed with an appreciative eye for detail. Only then can one completely come to truly know and love Eloise's delightful, true personality. "Eloise" is the only one of four books that are still in print. I give her to my closest friends as a gift from my heart. I do not own, nor have I ever had the pleasure of reading "Eloise in Moscow" and "Eloise in Paris", as they, along with "Eloise at Christmastime" are, sadly, no longer in print. It is my one desire, to someday locate these two books, and possess them, too, for my very own.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Absolutely, utterly fantastic 31. Dezember 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book has been a favorite of mine for a long time now, ever since it first caught my eye on the shelf of a store. Kay Thompson's imaginative little girl, who tells precisely that she is six, and that she is "ELOISE", is so mischievous but immediately likeable; but credit also goes to Hilary Knight, for I cannot imagine a better drawn character for Eloise. Ms.Knight somehow just somehow manages to capture the essence of her, and I admire her for that.
Although I'am now 14, I still re-read the book when it's a rainy day or when I need to smile. Eloise brightens up my life, and I'am ever so grateful to my mom for buying it for me!!
If you haven't read Eloise, you don't know what you're missing out on, and I suggest that you hurry up and read it!!

I was given this book as a child. It is still one of my favorites that I own. I bought a new Eloise for my older daughter, who passed it onto her little sister. This is a story of a little girl, Eloise, who lives at the Plaza Hotel with her nanny. She has a very vivid imagnation and is quite an actress. Her adventures in a single day can leave the reader with panges of envy. If only I could do what she does and get away with it. Her nanny fits into the role of a "I missed the boat" of becoming a Mary Poppins graduate. Still you have to love her because you know she really loves Eloise. Sit back and enjoy the ride,
the elevator ride of course. It will keep you busy for a good 20 minutes. This book will be read more than once. I guarantee it.....

5.0 von 5 Sternen Childlike and Literary 13. Juni 1999
Von C. Burch
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
A few weeks ago, I took a friend and her two 5 year old twin girls to dinner. There was a 45 minute wait, and we went to the bookstore next door. I was dreading the prospect of entertaining two 5 year olds for 45 minutes until I saw a copy of Eloise, which has been out of print for many years. I sat down and started reading to them. The time flew by. A few older women walked by and smiled. I like to think that they had read the book when they were little girls. The 45 minutes went by all too soon for me.
What can I say about Eloise? We named our DOG Eloise when I was a boy. It is both literary and true to children. It is one of the books (like Charlotte's Web or Black Beauty) that stays in your heart from childhood.
Give it to your children.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic...reminiscent...tears at my heart... 13. November 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I grew up with the Eloise books, and it's how I learned of places in the world. I remembered how to say "farewell" in Russian to friends traveling there because of the "Moscow" book! Unfortunately, my Mother's copies have somehow disappeared within the past ten years. I am heartbroken; and when searching for copies, I found several of each: Eloise at Christmastime, Eloise in Moscow and Eloise in Paris. The "Christmas" book was over $600! The cheapest copy of the others was $180. I was heartbroken again! More than anything, I'd just like my childhood copies back. Anyone who has NOT read these books has truly missed a piece of childhood. LET'S GET THIS PUBLISHER TO RE-RELEASE ALL OF THESE BOOKS FOR US ALL!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Eloise is a character dear to my heart. 26. November 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
My mother gave me "Eloise at Christmas" when I was a child because she said I reminded her of Eloise. I treasured this book for many years, but have been without it for the last ten. I join the others who were thrilled to find "Eloise" but have been searching for "Eloise at Christmas" to no avail. I hope the publisher reads enough comments to release the Eloise books. I love Eloise's style, her character, and her exploits, all brought to life by the wonderful illustrations. My three sons' children's books are packed away for the next generation, but "Eloise" is on MY bookshelf so I can reach for it anytime. How I would love to have "Eloise at Christmas" right there beside it!
