Kurzbeschreibung

This book views Samsung Electronics in terms of corporate life cycle as well as product portfolio and strategy. It also examines the issues Samsung faces as it proceeds further into the 21st century.

Written from the perspective of an experienced commentator on Korean and global business, this book presents not simply a narrative or an adulatory and uncritical account of Samsung's rise, but a considered analysis of the secrets of success that both business students and CEOs will want to read and consider applying to their own companies.

A fascinating look at an Asian business 22. Juli 2010
Von John Gibbs - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Although many business books promise business success, one of the strongest themes of academic criticism of this literature should be that, in business, success does not last, according to Tony Michell in this book. The book tells the story of the rise of the Samsung group of companies and the spectacular success in the last decade of Samsung Electronics.

Most business books written in English relate to businesses in the US, the UK or other predominantly English-speaking countries with similar cultures, but the rising importance of Asian businesses in the global economy makes it increasingly necessary that Westerners understand the driving forces behind successful Asian businesses. Although this book is not written by a Samsung insider, it is written by an academic with extensive knowledge of the Korean business environment.

Particularly interesting insights include: the influence and control that a single founder and the founder's family seem to have had over Korean businesses that have grown very large; the degree to which Korean laws have resulted in the unusual corporate structures; the ways in which Korean culture has helped and hindered the success of Samsung; and the continuing struggle between old and new cultural forces within the company.

There is some repetition in the text, and I found some parts of the book less interesting than others, but on the whole I found it both interesting and informative, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the electronics industry or who is just curious about the story behind the company that makes those mobile phones, LCD displays and other consumer electronic devices.

Not bad, kind of short, could have had deeper analysis 7. Dezember 2011

If you are looking for a book that provides insights into Samsung Electronic's culture, history, and challenges, then this book will not disappoint.

Although the book contained plenty of material, I also felt it left out plenty more.

Samsung Electronics is a 40+ year old company that had to overcome numerous challenges throughout its history. I felt the author could have done more detailed analysis on the dynamics of those challenges and how Samsung Electronics was able to overcome them. For example, the author barely touched on Samsung Electronic's struggles to be one of the primary players in the HD-TV industry, and the dynamics of its epic battles against the Japanese competitors were largely, but not totally, ignored. The author mostly ignores how the digital revolution and the paradigm shift from analog (such as TV and audio) to digital devices (HD-TV, MP3 players, 2G and 3G cell phone networks) created an opportunity which Samsung foresaw and was able to pounce on with intense focus and speed.

Eric Kim and his role in SE's global marketing strategy is documented well. If you want to know how successful marketing strategy can have big impact on the bottom line of a company, then Samsung Electronic's case should not be missed.

The book also provides insights into what is like to work for Samsung Electronics. What are the organizational challenges? How does it treat its employees? Why are so many of its senior managers laid off on a regular basis? If you are interested in working in Korea and want to know the workings of a Korean conglomerate, then this book will provide good insights, particularly at the end chapters.

Overall, I recommend this book for those who want to understand SE, and other Korean conglomerates, better.

Interesting look inside the recent history of Samsung 9. April 2011

Along with Samsung vs. Sony, this book is a great look at Samsung's history and Korean business culture.

The book' anecdotes include Samsung's entry into Korea's mobile phone business when Motorola was King in the 90s, the onset of the 1997 Financial Crisis and the resulting opportunity to recreate the organization, Samsung's near exit of the consumer electronics industry in 1998, the rise of Eric Kim - a Korean-American voice within the company in the early 2000s, along with the goal of building a brand personality, and Samsung's targeting of Sony and subsequently Apple later on in the decade.

All in all, a great book on Korean business, written in discrete, bite-sized chapters, and a must read for anyone looking to work in Korean conglomerates or to gain an understanding of Samsung's past and current position.
