Brier's idea of reversing the usual study of Egyptian mummification by creating a mummy rather than scanning or dissecting one is a remarkable story of determination despite setbacks posed by his university and others. He tantalizingly discusses the possibility of such a project, mentioning the approval of the National Geographic Society and the disapproval of his university, then spends the entire book unveiling what factual evidence exists concerning the mummification process and what information is yet unknown. More than practicalities are covered, for there is even a chapter devoted to the mummy in literature and film. But as for the actual results of his project, readers will have to wait for the video or Brier's next book. Nothing is revealed here but the preliminary research, a fascinating story in itself. Everything you always wanted to know about the ancient Egyptian practice of mummifying corpses--and so much more. Brier (Ancient Egyptian Magic, 1980) sets the tone early: ``For 15 years,'' he states matter-of-factly, ``I had been working toward the goal of mummifying a human.'' Imagine his surprise and disappointment when the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University (where he is chairman of the philosophy department) declined the honor of being the site of this project, which among other things would have entailed keeping an unembalmed corpse on the campus for 70 days. The text treats the reader to a scattershot review of the wide variety of information Brier learned about mummies while doing research for the mummification. These range from clinical descriptions of the process (derived from Herodotus and other ancient writers as well as from archaeological evidence) through an account of the development of mummification in ancient Egypt to a fascinating look at medical information scientists have derived from mummies (for instance, that ancient Egyptians suffered from often fatal tooth decay and arterial diseases). Brier discusses French scientists' close, but disappointingly unfruitful, study of Ramses the Great's mummy, briefly takes note of the Egyptian religious and cultural practice of mummifying animals, and inventories famous royal mummies. He concludes rather far afield with a discussion of ``The Mummy in Fiction and Film.'' Mercifully, the book closes before he embarks on the macabre task of actually mummifying a medical cadaver in the ancient manner, which is scheduled to take place this summer. A great gift idea for the hard-core Egyptologist in your life. General readers with strong stomachs may also enjoy Brier's eccentric ramble through the ancient world. Ein ausgezeichnetes Buchdas den Neuling in das Gebiet der altägyptischen Mumien einführt. Das Buch ist gut strukturiert und geht nicht zu sehr in die tiefe. Für denjenigen, der auch nach diesem Buch noch weitere Infos sucht, steht ein umfangreiches Literaturverzeichnis zur Verfügung.

I recieved this book three...maybe four years ago as a gift. At first, the photographs of actual corpses and mummified remains of people who lived thousands of years ago kind of spooked me out every time I looked at the book, but as time went on and I got used to the photographs, I was able to actually read and appreciate this informative text. The mummies (which were not in bandages, necessarily, but unwrapped, uncovered, and undisturbed) actually became interesting to view, and I was able to gain an even greater appreciation of Ancient Egyptian culture through reading this book. If all a person knows about mummies comes from a Brenden Fraser, a Louis Gossett Jr., or a Boris Karloff movie, s/he will be stunned to read a book like this, which is entertaining, informative, and most importantly true to the ancient culture of Egypt.

I read this book a few years ago, and thought that it was absolutely wonderful! It made me think of mummies in a different light: not as being nasty corpses, but as being beautifully preserved human remains of an ancient people who were very much loved. It was very interesting and informative about it's topic. I think that it would appeal to anyone interested in mummies, not just scholars. As soon as I started reading it, I knew I would love it. And I did. Dr. Brier is a very interesting writer, as well as an extremely nice and cheerful person. (I met him at a lecture last month) I highly reccomend this book to everyone, regardless.
