"Willeke Wendrich's edited volume, Egyptian archaeology, is perhaps the most ambitious of the three on offer here in terms of its scope and I would strongly recommend it." ( Antiquity , 1 January 2013) "Recommended. All academic levels/libraries." (Choice , 1 April 2011) Review copy sent 05/04/11: Faculty of Philosophy

Written by some of the world’s leading experts, Egyptian Archaeology employs a uniquely archaeological approach to explore ancient Egypt. Drawing on original research and excavations to both synthesize and challenge existing scholarship, this book dispels traditional notions of Egyptian culture as monolithic. Each author explicates current understandings of the cultural and historical processes of ancient Egypt, illustrating that practical research is a vital and fascinating component of any theory-based discussion about the ancient world.

By examining fundamental issues and important temporal, regional, and social developments through a global lens, Egyptian Archaeology brings existing debates vigorously up-to-date, while challenging students to think about their own interpretations, expectations, and attitudes towards ancient and modern Egypt. Engaging and progressive, this fully illustrated volume provides an insightful investigation into the world of ancient Egyptian archaeology and culture.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A basic book on Egyptian archaeology 26. April 2010
Von Ciho Miron - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Interesting enough, archaeology is not considered by students as one of their favorite subjects. They have in mind pottery, field excavations, geometrical instruments, after all something not as much as spectacular as other sciences related to history. There are only a couple of books with such a subject from Egyptological point of view. One which call attention is the "Egyptian Archaeology", edited by Prof. W. Wendrich from the University of California. Through 15 chapters, high qualified scientists, tried and succeeded to convince us about the usefulness of the archeological researches to reconstruct the Ancient Egyptian mode of life. "Egyptian Archaeology" is a book that should be read. For the beginner, it offers an easy point of entry into the vast world of the Ancient Egyptian archaeology. It provides quick access to a wealth of information about some of the more important subjects related to this topic. The helpful bibliographies, numerous plans and photographs, and affordable price made a worthy book even more appealing. It can be of great value for students, archaeology professors, archaeologists, museum staff, archaeology volunteers, and general readers.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Useful, compelling study of Egyptian archaeology 8. Mai 2014
Von Josh - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I've bought a number of books from Blackwell's "Studies In Global Archaeology" series, and this is one of my favorites. Like other books in the series, its intention is not to give a fully descriptive account of Egyptian archaeology from start to finish, replete with examples of each variety of ceramic vessel and burial type, etc. Instead, this book aims to weave together many of the major (and some of the minor) threads of archaeology in Egypt today. It accomplishes this through a substantive set of chapters written by professionals working in the field, each one focusing on a different theme.

In this vein, this book (and others in the series) can serve as anything from an introductory text to a reference book for an advanced class in archaeology - either way, it will easily become the centerpiece for stimulating discussions in archaeological circles. You won't come away from this book being able to identify obelisks by style and time period - but you will be able to have a competent, compelling conversation about the intricacies of studying the Egyptian past.
