"Short, readable, clear, and passionately written. A good introduction to Egypt's story."-Boston Globe Boston Globe "Tarek Osman, a Western-educated Egyptian banker and occasional columnist, brings the eye of an intelligent amateur to the story of this country's past half century. He writes with feeling, backed up by an impressively broad list of sources as well as sharp critical insight and astute judgement."-The Economist Economist "Osman delivers textured historical context ... and he focuses analysis more accurately than most current pundits."-Carlin Romano, The Chronicle of Higher Education -- Carlin Romano The Chronicle of Higher Education "Published a short time before thousands of Egyptians began pouring into Cairo's Tahrir Square, Egypt on the Brink is a timely account of Egypt near the end of the 30-year Mubarak era. It is presented thematically, rather than chronologically, and one of the most intriguing themes is the notion that whereas Egypt in the age of liberal nationalism (the 1920s and 1930s) and the Nasser years (1952-70) had a regional standing and a sense of national purpose, Hosni Mubarak's regime lost both this standing and this purpose as it devolved into a dreary despotism. Yet Osman writes with neither nostalgia nor disdain. Separate chapters discuss the Islamists, the Christians, the rise of liberal capitalism, and Egypt's youth. Even the conclusion, which speculates on who and what regime would replace Mubarak, now overtaken by events, offers useful thoughts on Egypt's distinctive politics."-L. Carl Brown, Foreign Affairs -- L. Carl Brown Foreign Affairs

A good book that would benefit from more careful proofing 7. September 2014
Von Khalid Ikram - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
Tarek Osman provides an analysis that would serve as a good background for understanding recent developments in Egypt. He covers both economic and political factors. However, after discussions with former members of former President Mubarak's Cabinet as well as with opposition figures, I feel that Osman does not give due weight to what they regarded as the principal reason for the uprising and what put Egypt at the tipping point, namely, the succession factor. I was repeatedly told that the building up of Gamal Mubarak to succeed his father as President was the crucial issue -- "we did not want a 'hereditary republic'" was how one of them put it, while the word "dynasty" frequently recurred in the conversations.

The book is fluently written, but unfortunately is marred by a number of incorrect statements, misspellings, and omitted references; the author and Yale University Press have not done justice to themselves by their sloppines. I have communicated some of these mistakes to them, and there is thus no point in broadcasting them here. I hope they will be corrected in a revised version, because the book merits a second edition.

Readable and Informative 2. November 2012

As someone with no background in Egyptian history, I found this book accessible and very informative. It provides a thorough introduction to the history of the country since Nasser and a good overview of the different socio-economic and cultural tensions shaping political events. The chapters are organized around these issues rather than chronology, such that each chapter makes an argument about why things developed as they did. Consequently, this is not a great choice if you just want to know what happened and when. While historical facts feature prominently, this book is intended for people who want to understand not just what happened, but why. It is an excellent book for discussion and a great starting-off point for further inquiry into the subject. It gave me some good ideas for research topics.

OSMAN is a genius! 24. Juli 2014
Von Paul Sutliff - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
One of the most comprehensive histories on Egypt in print today. If you want the background of what happened this is the book. The only difficulty in this book is its organization. However, the amount of material it shares is hard to compare to anything.
