5.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting book! 22. März 2014

I love this book and I used it to self-hypnotize me! I read it before I fell asleep when my brain produced Alpha-Waves which is a kind of trance. I did this on 3 nights and I've been eating totally differently for 3 weeks!
Since I'm not a native speaker I sometimes don't understand very scientifical explanations but nevertheless, it's really interesting and great!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good Overview of clean eating 17. August 2011
Von Library Girl Reads - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
Eating Clean for Dummies is what one would expect from the 'for Dummies' series. The book is cleanly laid out with great use of white space, text boxes, bullet points, and font changes. Symbols along the sides of the page highlight information that is extra important. It is not necessary to read the entire book from beginning to end because there is enough repetition of information that you can simply start with whichever section you are the most interested in.

Eating Clean for Dummies systematically approaches why and how to change your diet to include more fresh foods and fewer processed ones. Scientific explanations are used often but simplified so they are not overwhelming. The book addresses the best foods to eat to prevent certain illnesses and the best foods to eat if you have already been diagnosed. Organic fruits, vegetables, and meats are addressed but the authors do not feel that you have to switch to an entirely organic diet to eat cleanly. They do give a list of the foods that are best purchased organic because they are the most affected by chemicals while also giving a list of the foods that you don't need to be as concerned about.

One thing that I found very interesting is that throughout most of the book the authors seemed to be advocating a very balanced diet including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meats, and dairy but in a few sections they referenced the health benefits of the Paleo diet which excludes grains, diary, and legumes. While I realize that some variations on diets do benefit different people in different ways (a point the authors do make), I wonder if they believe the Paleo diet is actually a better eating plan but were not willing to say that clearly because there would be so much resistance from people?

The book does include recipes in the last section. While many of them sound good, I haven't actually gotten around to trying them yet.

Overall the basic message is that the closer the food source is to its natural state, the better our bodies can make use of it. The authors do acknowledge the difficulty in transitioning from processed foods (which can be addictive) to a cleaner diet and offer suggestions to ease that transition. They also realize that most of us cannot eat 100% cleanly all the time so give goals such as starting with a 50/50 split and working toward making more clean meals and snacks each week.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Exactly What I've Been Looking For 7. August 2011
Von Alcee Arobin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I've been looking for a comprehensive book on health and nutrition for quite a while, and this is the one. The authors sum up the premise of their guide in the first chapter: "Eating clean boils down to one simple fact: Avoid processed foods."

With that in mind, the book is divided into six parts, one of which is a catalog of recipes. Part I highlights the benefits of whole foods and the dangers of processed and refined foods. Part II is my favorite. Here the authors outline specific approaches geared toward tackling an array of health problems - from high cholesterol and overweight, to diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. It even touches more minor issues, like clear skin. Part III is a game plan for stocking your kitchen with clean foods, and also addresses the benefits and debates surrounding organic foods, cooking methods, and food storage. Part IV outlines ways to adapt clean eating to your day-to-day routine. There are recommendations for eating out, prepared lunches, and ideas to help a family make the transition together. There is also a chapter on special dietary considerations, should one suffer from food allergies or follow a strict diet such as veganism or gluten-free.

Part V is the recipe section, and the book concludes with Part VI, which suggests ways to tell if your clean diet is working.

This is the book for anyone looking for a general reference guide to food science and the basics of nutrition. Not only that, it is also an excellent manual for the practical sides of reworking your diet. Highly recommended!

This book is very helpful for someone who is just starting to eat "clean." It includes information on harmful food additives, chemicals, and other things in processed foods. There are lots of helpful tips on what foods to buy, which ones to avoid, etc. Recipes are included in the back of the book.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good if you are a newbie, but there are better ones 22. März 2012
Von Rachel Himes - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
This book is a good starter, but I wouldn't refer to it exclusively as a source for "clean" eating. Actually, Clean Eating magazine and Muscle and Fitness Hers are much better sources on the practical aspect of eating, shopping and cooking "clean".

If you're just looking for an introduction to the what, why and how of "clean" eating, this is a good starter. It provides the benefits of whole foods versus their processed counterparts. It's especially informitive in the area of nutrient breakdown. The author sites key nutrient differences between whole and unprocessed foods and sites the impact they have on the body both immediately and long term. From the nutritional aspect, this book does a great job. It is, however, redundant. Each chapter has various nutrient charts, but the information is very repetitive. If you're cross referencing rather than reading it all the way through, I suppose that could be an advantage.

If you're looking to eat clean on a plant-based diet, this is not a very good resource at all. I have read much better sources such as books by Dr. Fuhrman, and Neal Barnard among others. This one throws a "bone" to the veggie crowd, but offers little practical information on eating a clean plant-based diet.

There is mention of the benefits of organic produce versus inorganic, but it only skims the surface. There is much more information available showing distinct differences in nutrient content between the 2 types of veggies/fruits, but the author really only focuses on the absence of chemical additives.

Finally, the recipe section is brief and calls for a number of strange and unfamiliar ingredients for the novice cook.

Overall, the book is okay. I personally think that most any book by Tosca Reno or Clean Eating magazine would give you a better "how to" complete with pictures and more user-friendly recipes. This one isn't bad, but I can only recommend it to the absolute beginner.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Eating for the 21st Century 20. August 2011
Von Alejandra Vernon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Sooner or later, we're all going to be faced with health issues and how we eat, and with skyrocketing costs for medical stuff, feeding ourselves with clean, healthy food is a better option. Eating Clean for Dummies is a good transitional book, a primer for those who have shied away from "health food" all their lives, and are now getting around to changing their eating habits.

Chapter 13, "Getting Your Family on the Bandwagon" is a nice place to start this transition. It gives you ideas on how to move slowly in a 10 week period and make it acceptable for a family that has been used to eating the usual burger/fries/soda meals into more weight/health conscious food choices, and liking it. As their skin gets clearer, their energy increases, and the "muffin tops" decrease in size, they'll get to appreciate it more and more. Chapter 8 is also useful, "Eating Clean to Manage Diseases," as well as "Planning and Stocking the Eating Clean Kitchen," which has some great storing tips.

Chapters 15-18 have many wonderful recipes, including several delectable desserts, and of course, every chapter starts with a hilarious Rich Tennant cartoon. Dr. Jonathan Wright and nutritionist Linda Larsen have done an excellent job with this Dummies book, giving folks an overview on the really extensive subject of clean eating and how it affects your health, your family, and as an added bonus, your waistline.
