I love dump cakes. There's nothing easier when you are craving a dessert but are too tired (or I won't tell anyone...too lazy :) to fix a fancy dessert but want something sweet, perhaps gooey to hit the spot. These might not "look" like a masterpiece when you are Done but...oooohhoooo, they sure taste like it. There are so many different types of dump cake recipes, also just about as many different books out there about them that while you often get a few "repeats", most of them have so many different ways to make them special for your family that there's no such thing as having too many dump cake books! As many people there are that like them, there are just as many different kinds of recipes out there to try. Something I appreciate about the women, or men, who write these recipes is they are really great about sharing different ideas, and encourage you to "tweak" the recipe to make it your own!

The recipes are as easy as ever, with ingredients that most of us already have in our home and it makes it super easy to make a last minute dessert for your family and be their sweet tooth super hero mom! If you are now like me.... I started buying vanilla, chocolate, spice cake and others whenever they went on sale to keep myself stocked up.

This way if I ever want or need a dessert that can quickly be made for a last minute family get together, or a late night snack, a small get together for friends or for a large church pot luck supper, I never need to worry about running around in a 24hr grocery looking for last minute ingredients or searching frantically through recipe books hoping for some last minute inspiration with a picture of a nice dessert that was, not only easy, but quick to make.

What else makes all those Dump Cake recipes and books you bought great for family reunions or church buffets etc. is that you can double, triple or more the recipe and as long as you have a long enough pan so it's not any thicker than a single cake layer you can feed a yummy dessert for a very larger crowd easily without needing to have a degree in astrophysics to get the calculations for the cakes ingredients for so many at a time. It's just basically adding the boxes of cake mix,plus so many cups of hot water and melted butter,then so many cans or cups of whatever kind of fruit you are using etc.

DUMP CAKES are so easy to make, are inexpensive and I can put ONE or MORE in the oven all together at the same time and, while my family and I are getting ready for the event, it's baking. Within usually only 25-45 min of baking, depending on which cake, by time I'm ready to walk out the door the cakes are ready.

IF I really wanted to make it special I can stop on the way to pick up some vanilla ice cream or canned whipped dairy (one of those other things I like to stock up on when they go on sale. It's just so good on warm cake straight from oven, blueberry pancakes, hot cocoa etc, need I say more?). For me, just adding that extra touch makes it that much more satisfying and I can feel great knowing I brought something homemade and yummy too contribute, yet didn't have to get stressed out about finding the time, or let's face it, sometimes the inclination!

It's great to have all those quicky recipes but in this particular book it's nice that there are at least 4-6 recipes if you add a few extra minutes to mix a few ingredients in a bowl first, using a special cake like a burnt cake pan to make it look fancier, with those few extra minutes you can have something yummy, yummy,... did I say yummy? and also something a little more sophisticated to bring to a holiday dinner and still get the same rave reviews for such a pretty cake that looks like nothing like your typical dump cake.


BUT in case the word DUMP makes it sounds like it looks like one after you've made it let me assure you it doesn't! It looks just like the cobblers your grandma used to make. So why is it called a DUMP CAKE? It's because for the recipes that fall completely in this category (whether sweet or savory, yes they now have main Entree dump recipes,I can't wait to try ) These recipes are just like the "one bowl" or "one pan" recipes I'm sure you heard of.

This makes it a perfect "1st" cake to make with your children or grandchildren or nieces and nephews! There are just a few steps.

1. Preheat your oven

2. Butter a 13x9 cake pan with a few parts of butter, not a spray sub kind if you know what I mean. (or if you like it deeper like I do, use a 11x8 pan)

3. Pour in your cans of fruit pie or cups of frozen fruit defrosted (if using frozen with no added sugar the typical recipe calls for more sugar added in and mixed first with it once defrosted. Use any kind of fruit, blueberries, peaches, cut up rhubarb (another that needs extra sugar just like a pie)etc. Use you imagination to make your unique Dump cake. 3 berry for instance!

4. Pour a whole box of yellow cake MIX over your fruit. Or Chocolate with cherries on bottom for a black forest cake, or other choc recipes you'll discover. Apple pie filling goes with spice cake mix as well as vanilla etc.

5. Anywhere from 1/3 to 1 cup (depending on recipe)of butter melted and drizzled all over the dry cake mix. You not use whipped butters or other "types". Use margarine or real butter. I use margarine in mine and it's fantastic.

6. Here's the fun one. Sometimes a cup of warm water poured over the whole thing or milk. Sometimes it will call for nuts or chocolate chips or yummy caramel... it goes on and on. Each recipe has a list of all the different ingredients you can either put in or leave out or substitute with something else

7. Do not stir it up. It looks pretty funny when it goes in the oven and you swear you must have done something wrong because it looks so odd and unfinished but that is HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK! Bake it for however long it says. If you made it deeper like I do it will take at least 20 or more minutes. What you want to see is something that looks just like a cobbler. Not sure why they didn't call it Dump Cobblers but the cake mix part will now look like a cobbler and you want it to be a nice golden brown with the inside fruits and stuff are bubbling up, in the middle and around the outside.

8. And the last step (besides gobbling it down) is just a little advice. 95% of Dump Cakes are better tasting when warm. AFTER cooling just a little after taken from oven or rewarming leftovers in the microwave. PLUS IT MAKES MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE TOPPING, COLD VANILLA ICECREAM on top of the warm cake....hmmmm gosh I think I am starting to salivate just thinking about it. If it's a chocolate cake choc syrup over the ice cream...if Apple try melted caramel and even your favorite nuts sprinkled over the ice cream. Go for it...even if you only make them once in a while you might as well go for it completely.


What's so much GREAT about Dump Cakes, especially if you are having some fun bonding with your children helping etc. is that all these steps besides reheating oven and melting butter can be done entirely by your child.
AND TEENS, if they've had some experience baking or cooking with you (most by this age would be insulted with my even mentioning their experience) and know about preheating and melting butter till it's "just" melted in the microwave in a large enough bowl to prevent spills and getting burned by hot butter...this is something the can make ENTIRELY on their own. It's a great way for them to learn about baking and responsibility (timing the cake and taking it out at the right time and gaining self-confidence in the kitchen. Using their imagination to come up with some of their own ingredients while following the basic premise of the recipe. Then cleaning up after!!! It's something they can do with their friends or just make on their own to surprise you!

So if you have never tried a DUMPCAKE, I recommend it highly. You will not regret it. And everyone who eats it will be asking for your recipe and be amazed with your answer if they've never had it before either!

AND after this, try one of the savory Dump Dinners. THATS NEXT ON MY LIST :)

I don't think I would have a bad thing to say about any Dumpbook unless there was nothing in it that seemed at all even remotely an original thought even if just added on to another's.

I wish this book were longer is my only complaint, but it's not enough for me to reduce its interest to me and take away a star.
What IS different that I like and although there are others that include them too, are the couple of recipes, that with a few more minutes and a little mixing, look like they would be very good. Ill try one on a fun day with my daughter.

What also influenced my 5 *s was the ease of reading and understanding the recipes. When I first started trying out dump cakes some of the books I read just assumed I'd know what to do with the melted butter or even how to "layer" the ingredients and then NOT MIX THEM ALL TOGETHER after. They are the easiest cakes to make but my first one was a disaster , still tasted good just didn't brown with a dumpling like crust on top because I completely mixed up all the ingredients before putting it in the oven. This book has concise and easily to understand recipes that's why it would be a great one to use with kids.

Sorry for such A long review. Guess I better start socializing a little more so I get all my "TALKATIVENESS" out on some one else .

Easy to use and great for the beginner. recipes are inexpensive to try. people will think that you spent all day in the kitchen or it must of been a passed down family secret.

I'd heard of dump cakes and wanted some recipes, so this was perfect. In particular I wanted recipes that don't require eggs. I've not yet tried the recipes, so my rating is based on how inspired I was after reading a number of these simple recipes.

I thought the recipies were all kind of similar and way too many requiring cans of cherries, boxed cake and pudding mixes.
