The secluded Rushdie's first collection of short stories, his first major work of fiction since the explosive 1989 novel The Satanic Verses, has been much anticipated and won't disappoint. These nine delectable stories are divided into three categories, "East," "West," and "East, West." The Eastern ones have a Thousand and One Nights flavor and are set in Rushdie's native Pakistan. The best in this grouping is "Good Advice Is Rarer than Rubies," about a young woman who goes to the British consulate for a visa so that she may live with her husband; her charm defeats the old man she encounters at the door, who wants to supply her with fraudulent papers. Rushdie's Western stories incorporate elements of magic realism and feature European settings. The most compelling is "Christopher Columbus and Queen Isabella of Spain Consummate Their Relationship," giving the affiliation between the encounterer of the New World and his regal sponsor a decided sexual angle. The stories in the "East/West" section bring the two worlds together, and the outstanding one of that beautiful trio is "The Harmony of the Spheres," about a deeply felt but tragically ended friendship between an Englishman and a Pakistani. Rushdie's brilliant style reinforces his stories' marvelous combination of dignity and poignancy. Though these stories were originally published in such periodicals as the New Yorker and the Atlantic, the collection will serve for many readers as an introduction to Rushdie's talent in the short story form. Rushdie's writing contains the joyous confusions of being claimed by two cultures. I love when Rushdie digresses a bit and lets loose a curious flood of details, such as when describing a case of noxious bad breath, or, delivering a feast of images as he does in "At The Auction of the Ruby Slippers." The stories are rewardingly short--you can enjoy an 11-minute vacation and come back with something to think about.

A Good Intro to Rushdie,

I really enjoyed this collection of stories, and think that the book is a good introduction to Rushdie. I think my favorites in the collection were "The Prophet's Hair," and "The Courter." In fact, I think "The Prophet's Hair," was the story which truly reminded me that Rushdie knows how to turn a phrase. While at times there is a certain ambivalence in some stories, I think that is understandable in point of view of Rushdie's own background. It is an attitude that comes from being a product of two cultures and wanting to have claims to both, not just one or the other, as Rushdie so elegantly proclaims at the end of "The Courter."

Nine short stories of very different quality,

Although every short story contained within this collection bears the unmistakeable mark of its author, they are very different in terms of content, style, and even quality. Interestingly enough, tended to enjoy the "Eastern" stories more than the "Western" ones, perhaps because they were not so strongly interwoven with bizarre references to pop-culture. (Normally, I'm quite fond of the post-modern tendency to mash up everything from television shows to "high" art, but in this case, I was not that impressed.) I guess I will use some of these texts in my upcoming lecture on the effects of Globalization on contemporary literature.
