Kurzbeschreibung

30. Oktober 2007
A young woman possessed by a ghost has slain the Fisher King of the West, Scott Crane.  Now, temporarily freed from that malevolent spirit, she seeks to restore the King to life.

But Crane's body has been taken to the magically protected home of Pete and Angelica Sullivan, and their adopted son, Koot Hoomie. Kootie is destined to be the next Fisher King, but he is only 13 years old -- too young, his mother thinks, to perform the rituals to assume the Kingship.  But not too young, perhaps, to assist in reuniting Scott Crane's body and spirit, and restoring him to life.

The Fisher King of the American West, Scott Crane, has been killed, and 14-year-old Koot Hoomie Parganas's perpetually bleeding wound makes him the most likely candidate for a supernatural successor. But the king's body has not yet begun to decay, and as long as there is a chance that he can be restored to the throne, his right-hand man, Archimedes Mavranos, is willing to risk all to revive Crane. But to do that he'll need the help of the woman who killed Crane, plus that of a recently widowed winemaker who has been touched by the god Dionysus, and the cooperation of Parganas's reluctant foster parents. Chances are they'll all die in the process, but unless Crane can be revived they'll probably all die anyway. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Pressestimmen

"Powers continues his winning ways with Earthquake Weather, a sequel of sorts to the brilliant Expiration Date…Powers melds fact and fantasy so convincingly that you could spend a lot of time looking up the fancies he presents to determine if they're indeed true, partially true, or completely made up….Other writers tell tales of magic in the 20th century, but nobody does it like Powers."

4.0 von 5 Sternen When Two Books Combine 3. Dezember 2009
Von Monika Simon VINE™-PRODUKTTESTER
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
In 'Earthquake Weather' Tim Powers continues the stories of two previous books, Last Call and Expiration Date, that apart from their setting in contemporary California don't have much in common. It is therefore absolutely necessary to read both before starting 'Earthquake Weather' though either of them can be read first.

Since this is a Tim Powers book, the plot revolves around various mythological ideas, the heroes of the story are not always very heroic in the traditional sense and are hotly pursued by an almost equally large number of baddies of various ilk. Combining the cast of two separate books and adding some new characters and additional mythological topics is an ambitious project and not everybody will be convinced that Powers actually managed to pull it off - as the widely differing reviews make clear.

'Earthquake Weather' is a very long and convoluted tale, and definitely not among Tim Powers's best work. There were moments when I thought that this time the he just tried to squeeze in too much in one book and that it was a little too similar to the first two books. Nonetheless, I did enjoy reading the book, and can recommend it to those who a) have read the other two books, b) really like Tim Powers interesting and occasionally overly intricate stories and c) have some time on their hands. I definitely recommend reading the book quickly, as otherwise its sheer length and complexity may become unbearable.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Powers should avoid series 21. Oktober 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
Tim Powers is a masterful novelist. He shares an immortality obsession with the late Roger Zelazny, but with diverse and interesting historical context. However, he is best when he writes novels with diverse and seperate plotlines. The Drawing of The Dark, Anubis Gates, and On Stranger Tides had common themes, but stood alone and as a result, the intricate plot was resolved in each book. In this series, he has become so intricate that the story looses impact. Series are popular because many modern fantasy authors cannot seem to finish a complex tale in a single book (or want to milk a concept). Powers CAN write without resorting to such means, and simply writes better books when he does so. This series has simply gone on too long with the same plot line and characters. I look forward to his next effort and hope it is more like the novels addressed above.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Powers Delivers Again 18. Juli 1999
Format:Taschenbuch
Tim Power's unique characters and great story concepts shine through in this fun to read adventure. The characters from two of his previous works Last Call and Expiration Date come together in this tale to reincarnate Scott Crane the dead fisher king. The new characters, two of them psychiatric patients, Sid Cochran and Janis Plumbtree, are extremely interesting. The idea of Janis (aptly named) Plumbtree as a person with multiple personalities that can harbor ghost in her is a great concept.

I enjoyed this book more than Expiration Date but not as much as Last Call. The three book series is a must read for any true fan of the fantasy genre.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A strong narrative 6. Juni 1999
Format:Taschenbuch
Though Powers is always interesting, he has a tendency to get so lost in his own ideas that he wanders aimlessly around in them without keeping the story moving. Here, by spending little time explaining and lots of time moving the complex plot forward, Powers creates an effect that sweeps one along in the narrative. True, it means the reader starts out completely confused, but by letting us pick things up as we go, Powers does something important he frequently neglects to do: he actually goes somewhere. That's why I'm calling this his best work since that timeless classic, The Anubis Gates.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing 3. Juni 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
"Anubis Gates" is on of my favourite books, and I love the way Powers can weave a myriad of obscure (and not so obscure references) to create bizarre stories that somehow ring true. This, unfortunately, is not one of his better ones. Yes, it's quite possible to get all the references in this book and still not enjoy it; it feels leaden, and there's no real fun in it, and sheer bloodymindness is the only thing making me finish it.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Does Tim Powers have an editor? 21. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
Earthquake weather can best be described as a "sequel" to the author's previous Last Call and Expiration Date; particularly in the sense that one should not even bother to try and read it without having finished the other two. Unfortunately, rather than returning to the rich vein of modern mysticism that worked so well in Last Call, Powers buries an interesting premise under page after page of mind-bending self-reference. (Witness the "houdini-hands" phenomenon, a barely explained plot point from Expiration Date that repeatedly inserts itself into the story.) I began the trilogy with no expectation or preconception, was fascinated by the first volume, confused by the second, and frankly annoyed by this final installment. To those readers new to Powers - finish Last Call and walk away. You'll be glad you did.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Best Living Fantasist keeps getting better 16. März 1999
Format:Taschenbuch
Powers has really hit his stride. Last Call was brilliantly engrossing, and Expiration Date perhaps a bit of a letdown to many (not to me), but Earthquake Weather fulfills all the promise of the first two books and then some. (BTW, don't try to read this without reading the first two.) Powers is unmatched in creating a "real" world where fantastic things happen, and they happen a lot in this book. Sit back and enjoy the author's mastery of the off-kilter. When I finished it, I was moved to go back and reread the first two volumes all over again..... Powers, like Jonathan Lethem, is comfortably inhabiting the house Philip K. Dick built, and each is adding new wings. I eagerly await his next offerings.
