Even after teaching permaculture for over a decade, I still found plenty of useful information and tips here. It is packed full of interesting technical details, which as well as being valuable in themselves, serve as thorough reminders of what to include. This is balanced with suggestions on different ways of teaching. She provides us with questions to ask our students that are thought provoking and encourage personal connection and insights. Looby Macnamara, permaculture teacher and author of People and Permaculture

Terrible Representation of Permaculture 8. April 2014
Von Weston Ginther - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
I have read quite a few different permaculture books and this was, by far, the worst one. The book never establishes a solid outline or direction and is constantly jumping from one topic to the next. Instead of explaining the principles of permaculture in such a way that gives the reader the knowledge to apply what he/she has read, the author chooses to instruct the readers to perform somewhat futile tasks. For example, the author dedicates nearly an entire chapter on how to conduct a water audit for you or your family. While a water audit can sometimes be a useful tool in the "permaculture toolbelt", it should not be the focal or starting point for every property or personal situation like the author would like you to believe.

This book contains so many politically-biased, inaccurate statements it made my head want to explode. Unfortunately, it is these kinds of publications that are holding permaculture back from gaining widespread acceptance. Permaculture can dictate politics but politics should never dictate permaculture. More government regulations (carbon taxes, etc.) are the antithesis of permaculture. This book takes the ethics of permaculture and twists them to meet a certain political goal.

It is also impossible to look any particular topic up in this book since the index is less than a full page long. This book reads like a school textbook, so to have such a small index is terrible book planning.

Please, do NOT waste your money on this book!

Gaia's Garden or Sepp Holzer's Permaculture would be FAR better choices!!

One of Our Favorite Permaculture Books 28. Januar 2013
Von Fred T - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is very practical and tells you how to implement permaculture principles in your landscape or yard. Many books on permaculture get so much into theory that you cannot apply it in a practical manner. This book is not that kind of book. Very easy to read and gives you instruction in regards to implementing permaculture concepts quickly and effectively.

Not a good introduction to permaculture practices 13. Dezember 2014
Von Julie C. Allee - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Having taken a college class in permaculture where this was a required text, I am thoroughly disappointed. Some of the information makes sense, but in general you have to live in utopia (or terraform the planet) in order for much of the information to apply. In reality, we have to work with what we have and make the most of the situations we inherit from previous landowners - and NO piece of property is going to fit the criteria given in this text for where and how to position homes, gardens, etc. Some information is just not right in reality even if on paper it is a great idea. For example, it might make sense logically to store water in a pond uphill from your home so that using gravity you can feed water to the home as needed..... in reality, anyone who has ever had a pond bank wash out in a heavy rain will tell you what a great idea it would be to have a pond uphill from your home.

I was really excited to take this course, but this book had turned me off by the middle of it - I felt myself hating having to use the book for answers and getting more and more sarcastic in my answers because of the absurdity of the rules given. Not everyone starts with a blank slate when becoming interested in permaculture - yet that is what is made it seem like you needed. Ideas on how to incorporate permaculture practices in realistic ways (baby steps) would make it easier to get people started.

A practical piece 1. Oktober 2014
Von William R. Crandall - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
A straightforwardly organized, practical piece. It assumes some exposure to Mollison or Holmgren and does not go beyond them conceptually; however, it provides immediate practical detail with respect to developing and teaching permaculture classes, and a relatively simple framework for teaching that may not be obvious from works with the depth and scope of Mollison's Designer's Manual.
