Die Geschichte spielt 1947 kurz vor und während der Abspaltung Pakistans von Indien. Sie wird aus der Perspektive (Retrospektive) eines behinderten Mädchens erzählt, das mit seiner Kinderfrau im Park gern und oft deren Freunde unterschiedlichster religiöser Prägung trifft, viel Spaß hat und ein fröhliches, unbeschwertes Leben führt, bis das Land geteilt wird und aus Menschen Bestien werden.
Ein schonungsloser, teils sehr grausamer Film, der auf die üblichen Bollywood'schen Musicaleinlagen verzichtet und verstörende Einblicke in die menschliche Psyche gewährt.

Die vorangehende Rezension bezieht nicht auf Deepa Mehtas Fire, sondern auf einen ganz anderen, mir nicht bekannten Film. Ich kopiere hier deshalb meine eigene Kritik von amazon.co.uk, die ich geschrieben habe, nachdem ich den Film (also DEEPA MEHTAS Fire) zum ersten Mal gesehen hatte. Wie oft ich ihn mir seitdem wieder angeschaut habe, habe ich nicht gezählt - er ist immer wieder beeindruckend.
"I have just watched EARTH and I am quite simply shattered. I had been trying to get hold of the film for quite a while and of course I was somewhat afraid it might not be up to my expectations - it has exceeded them by far. It just is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. But be warned - it is by no means a Bollywood film or what has come to be understood by the term. The action takes place in Lahore, august 1947, and shows the cruel aspects of the Partition - the old, old story of politics suddenly turning friends into deadly enemies: Hindus turn against Muslims, Muslims turn against Hindus and in the midst of it there is an eight-year-old girl who watches it all and understands nothing - but still she experiences extreme sadness and suffering that will change her life forever. One of the most heartrending scenes is the one where she re-enacts one of the cruel scenes she has witnessed. Don't get me wrong - the atrocities are hinted at rather than explicitly shown; they are mostly in the head (they always are the worst kind, of course, because you can't shake them off - especially as you know they really did happen - and are still happening). The action centres around the girl and her nanny and her group of friends, of different religions and different social backgrounds. It all starts pleasantly and even funnily enough - but given the historical background you just know that the characters' destinies are spiralling to an unavoidably tragic climax where love turns into hate and trust is unforgivably betrayed. There is no happy ending, there just can't be - worse even, there is not even a glimpse of hope left one of the persons involved might have survived emotionally if bodily. The actors are all of them beyond par and Aamir Kahn is second to none - Hollywood, Bollywood or whatever. To my mind there are few actors if any who can bring great emotions across by this minimalistic means. This film will leave you drained but it is worth every minute of it."

This film is in black and white. Some times the scenes look a little faded. Who knows if this was done on purpose? This is one of the last silent films of the era. The music is well coordinated with the scenes. The film is 88 minutes long. Most of the time it is images or dancing. Remove the images and dancing and you have about 20 minutes. There is a written narration at the beginning of the movie to tell you of the author and purpose of the movie. The English subtitles cover only one fourth of the dialog. You have to be a fast reader to finish the title before the next scene.
An alternate title could be "Who killed Basil?" And why? This is the story of a conflict between the collective and the individual owned farms. The technologies (tractors and aero planes) are to represent the collective. Horses and sweat are to represent the farm owners. This is played out with close ups of the faces of the farmers and the farm animals.
An earlier reviewer missed the mark on one of the things that make this film controversial. He tried to relate this film to "Triumph of the Will" (1934) - English subtitles. The irony is that in 1930 the Soviet Communist League asked Ukrainian director Dovzhenko to make a propaganda picture. He was to dramatize the need for landowners to give up their properties in order to create collective farms. However they got more than they bargained for. Hitler wanted Leni Riefenstahl to make "The Olympiad": Part 1 (1936) - English subtitles. This was to emphasize Aryan superiority. The film turned out to be a work of art and if anybody benefited from it that was the black American runner Jesse Owens. "Earth" turned out to be a work of art and if it did anything, it helps solidify the feelings of the people that farm ownership has its merit.
