Kurzbeschreibung

11. Juni 2012
It was not till the traditional view of the world and the The coscustomary rules of life had broken down, that the Greeks iacter began to feel the needs which philosophies of nature and q. of conduct seek to satisfy. Nor were those needs felt ptuoall at once. The ancestral maxims of conduct were not seriously questioned till the old view of nature had passed away ;and, for this reason, the earH est philosophers busied themselves mainly with speculations about the world around them. In due season. Logic was called into being to meet a fresh want. The pursuit of cosmological inquiry had brought to Hght a wide divergence between science and common sense, which was itself a problem that demanded solution, and moreover constrained philosophers to study the means of defending their paradoxes against the prejudices of the unscientific. Later still, the prevaiU ng interest in logical matters raised the question of the origin and vahdity of knowledge ;while, about the same time, the break-down of traditional moraU ty gave rise toE thics. The period which precedes the rise of Logic andE thics has thus a distinctive character of its own, and may fitly be treated apart .I twill be observed thatD emokritos falls outside the period thus defined. The common practice of treating this younger contemporary of Sokrates along with the Pre-S ocratics obscures the historical development altogether. Demokritos comes after Protagoras, and he has to face the problems of knowledge and conduct far more seriously than his predecessors had done (see Brochard, Protagoras etD emocrite, A rch. ii. p. 368).

5.0 von 5 Sternen this is the first edition 27. Oktober 2004
Von Critic - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Potential buyers should be aware that this edition is a photographic reproduction of the 1892 first edition of Burnet's famous book. It would probably be better to find a copy (used) of the final, fourth edition.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Overview of the Presocratic Philosophy 15. Oktober 2000
Von Dragos Bucurenci - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
It is probably the best work on Presocratic philosophers including their biographies, found fragments and commentary. Burnet, who is best known for his translation of Plato's works (the Platonis Opera Oxoniensis), was one of the greatest specialists in ancient philosophy and this can be seen by the accuracy of the information this book offers. However, it is not one of those professional studies that bore the reader and don't manage to transmit any information. Apart from some newly (XXth century) acquired information in the field (that may have occurred since Burnet wrote this book), "Early Greek Philosophers" offers to the amateur reader the best overview on Presocratic Philosophy.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I found Burnet accessible for beginners, a good thing 14. August 2007
Von AlexBooksAndCDs - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
For those who are considering this book, I found it accessible to beginners, because it was the *first* book on the Presocratics I read, and I got through it fine (with no prior Greek Philosophy instruction). Not as "strenuous" as Kirk & Raven which had quotes imbedded in footnotes etc. making it more of a "scholarly" thing (but also excellent nonetheless).

1.0 von 5 Sternen Kindle edition virtually unreadable 17. Februar 2013
Von Pemphix - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Kindle edition is just scanned photographically so cannot be searched and has no usable page numbering or indexing. Main text is unalterably small and displays in landscape mode. Footnotes are smaller still, with Greek text almost impossible to make out.

1.0 von 5 Sternen REALLY POOR KINDLE VERSION 1. September 2013
Von Anup Tripathi - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The book itself might not be so bad but the kindle version just plain old sucks the pages are cut off and after that the whole book runs in the landscape mode with one or half page at a time. Just piss poor formatting. i don't know who did the formatting but i suggest you quit the business.
