Directed by Sindney Furie, this terrific thriller has one of Michael Caine's most memorable performances, and a sensational score by John Barry.
Caine's Harry Palmer is a marvelous character...an anti-Bond...a guy in a dull job who suddenly finds himself in extraordinary circumstances.
He has his quirks...he rebels against authority, has his sharp wit, his gourmet food, and "that look" behind the horn rimmed glasses.

The plot revolves around a "brain drain" of scientists in England, and has spies, the CIA, and all the usual suspects...which in this case, are a little harder to predict.
With brilliant writing (Bill Canaway and James Doran), superb cinematography (Otto Heller), and some good character actors (I love Alice the office lady...she's an anti-Ms. Monneypenny !) this is a film that will keep you interested for many viewings...suspenseful, amusing, and you'll just be wild about Harry.

Harry Palmer (Michael Caine) has no real love of espionage, but he doesn't really know any other life. With studied insolence, he takes on the case of locating missing doctor Radcliffe (Aubrey Richards), who has in his possession a valuable file that would prove injurious to the Free World should it fall in the wrong hands.
The government also fears that Radcliffe will be brainwashed by the enemy, as has happened to two previous British scientists. While Palmer is off doing everyone else's dirty work, his superior, Dalby (Nigel Green) is making a deal with duplicitous information "broker" Frank Gatliff to win Radcliffe's release. The price for this would seem to be Palmer, who is captured by the enemy and subjected to a grueling brainwashing session. Palmer escapes, whereupon he confronts a traitor in his midst in the climactic exchange of gunfire.
With top notch direction by Furie and Michael Caine's performance keeps you on the edge.

In England war es für Sir Michael Caine seinerzeit der große Durchbruch: die Harry-Palmer-Reihe.
Mit Ipcress-File (in Deutschland erschienen als "Ipcress") startete diese spannende Serie, die einen etwas stilleren und sachlicheren Helden hat als die damals so beliebten James Bond-Filme.
Michael Caine überzeugt durch seine britisch-konservative Art des Geheimagenten, jedoch ist Ipcress-File erheblich näher an der Realität als die Bond-Reihe.
Ein spannender Film, der in der englischen Originalversion auch für das Ohr etwas zu bieten hat.
