Pressestimmen

"This is a well written and thoughtfully structed book, and one which deserves a wide readership." (RoSPA Occupational Safety & Health Journal, 1 February 2011)

Rezension

‘Employers, college lecturers, students and all adults with dyslexia will be delighted to get their hands on this easily accessible and readable book. Although an introductory guide it covers all the key areas – assessment, accommodations, overlapping conditions, assistive technology, self-esteem, and legal issues.

‘This book is sure to be a best seller; written by experienced practitioners who show a great deal of understanding and empathy – its accessibility will make it a must-have for employers and university personnel, all who want to do their best for adults with dyslexia, but desperately need a clear blueprint to follow. This book is that blueprint!

‘I am sure all in the field will appreciate the efforts of Diana Bartlett, Sylvia Moody and Katherine Kindersley to provide a clear and succinct guide to help them understand the needs and the challenges of all adults with dyslexia more clearly.
—Dr Gavin Reid, Independent Psychologist and Consultant, Vancouver, Canada

‘Never before have I read a book that allows me to learn about myself in a style that is as clear, compassionate and focused as Diana Bartlett and Sylvia Moody’s in Dyslexia in the Workplace. It offers hope, encourages understanding and teaches ways to navigate the complications that adult life brings to the person who learns differently. This book is the ultimate in positive thinking and reality-based, easy-to-implement solutions.
— Debra Brooks, Educational and Behavioural Specialist and Consultant to the US Department of Defense

"How to find a suitable Diagnostic Assessor
A dyslexia assessor will belong to one of the following groups:
- clinical psychologist
- educational psychologist
- occupational psychologist
- research psychologist
- specialist dyslexia tutor.
However, it is by no means that case that every member of these groups specialises in assessing ADULT dysleixa. A suitable assessor can be found through the helplines of the British Dyslexia Association [...] or DANDA [...]. It is important to ensure that at least 50% of the assessor's practice is with ADULTS." (Seite 21 f.)
--> da wird man in Deutschland leider noch sehr lange suchen müssen.

Und dann bringt auch so ein Satz nichts
"The assessor will subsequently contact the employer to discuss reasonable adjustments that the latter coult put in place and advise on any relevant legal issues." (Seite 27)

Trotz solcher Ausnahmen ist das Buch sehr hilfreich auch für Deutsche.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent book on dyslexia and the world of work 6. September 2005

Review of 'Dyslexia in the Workplace' by Diana Bartlett and Sylvia Moody, published by John Wiley (previously by Whurr).

I would like to highly recommend this book: it gives invaluable information and advice about dyslexic difficulties in the workplace. It is aimed at three audiences: (1) dyslexic people who are having difficulty at work; (2) dyslexia professionals, such as tutors and psychologists; and (3) employers, in particular HR and training managers, and occupational health professionals.

In the first section of the book the authors explain the range and nature of dyslexic difficulties, and also deal with a related set of difficulties, dyspraxia. They show how these difficulties can affect work performance and describe in detail how the difficulties can be assessed. A particular strength of the book is that much attention is given not just practical difficulties but also to the emotional problems which are related to these. The book also does full justice to the strengths which dyslexic people have.

The second section of the book gives a wealth of strategies for dealing with the difficulties, and building on strengths. There is advice on work organisation, efficient work methods, reading with recall and comprehension, writing workplace documents, techniques for improving memory, oral skills, and ways of dealing with negative emotions, such as anxiety and frustration.

Particularly valuable are the sections which give advice to both the employer and employee on the sort of reasonable adjustments which can be made in the workplace to help dyslexic employees maximise their potential.

I found this book very easy to read, and extremely informative. I felt the authors really empathised with dyslexic people, and knew exactly what help they needed. They also understood exactly what employers need to know. I also liked the fact that they avoided jargon, and seem to be speaking very directly to their readers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Most excellent and practical!! 3. September 2005

No miracle cure, just common sense. That's what I liked about this book. Dyslexic people often lack in certain areas of every day life in the workplace such as organisation, planning skills, taking notes, passing correctly phone messages, etc. The author offers very handy tricks and work methods to tackle these difficulties. In other words: Tackling the problem from the root source. I was amazed at how simple and/or common-sensed these solutions were. Even non-dyslexics could greatly benefit from the many practical advice found in there, as well as helping them to understand the often very subtile difficulties of dyslexic adults in the workplace.

There is a section about how to cope with stress, insecurity and negative feelings. I found that to be very helpful - I would definitely recommend "Dyslexia in the workplace" to all dyslexics, their employers, family and friends alike.
