After reading "ashes to ashes", which I loved, I was really looking forward to reading another tami hoag thriller! And it definitely did not disappoint me! The way the story develops and keeps turning into different directions makes it very hard to put the book down. I really like the fact that it is almost impossible to tell "who did it" until the very last pages of the book! And the way she descibes the characters makes you feel like you know each one of them personally! Kovac and Liska,which were already introduced in "ashes to ashes" are really interesting characters and I hope that there will be another story with them in the near future! Do not hesitate to read this book if you like suspense novels!

When a young police officer is found hanging Seargant Sam Kovac ("Ashes to Ashes") is not ready to believe in suicide. His investigation leads him into a maze of betrayal within the force. The story takes fairly long to gain momentum, but eventually does - with a vengeance. If you are looking forward to one of Hoag's trademark love stories you may be disappointed this time. The ending, too, is fairly sad and unusual in comparison to her earlier novels. On reflection I actually enjoyed these traits - she keeps the reader on his or her toes until the end: an ending that one cannot extrapolate having read the first half of the novel. All in all: a gripping read.

This book is way too long. I almost stopped reading it until I got to page 250 when things started picking up. I'm glad I endured for half of it because the second half was what I'd been waiting for from page one - suspense, drama and enough twists and turns to hold the reader's interest until the end.
