Kurzbeschreibung

Losing her posh advertising job, her boyfriend, and her apartment all in the same morning has left Corinna Leyendecker with a massive mess where her life should be. She tries to get things back on track, but with a mountain of red tape between her and unemployment assistance and a string of disastrous job interviews under her belt, it’s clear that following the rules is getting her nowhere. So she decides to start doing things her way…

With the help of a quirky friend—and some unconventional branding—Corinna launches her own business: an elite cleaning service for wealthy men. And business is booming…until the day she finds a dead homeless man in the house of a fussy new client. As usual, Corinna’s instinct is to clean up, but body disposal isn’t easy, especially when you’re juggling work, friendships, media attention, and a nasty flu. It’s going to take more than a little elbow grease to finish this dirty job and come out clean.

The story was without depth ,together with the relationships. As a native English speaker I thought the translation was poor and simple

Mir hat dieses Buch vor allem deshalb gefallen, weil man sich so gut in die Charaktere hineindenken kann. Teils lustig, teils ernsthaft, und auch spannend geschrieben. Durchaus zu empfehlen als leichte Lekture.

Dust Angel is a mix between a "chick lit" and a mystery novel. Corinna Leyendecker, the protagonist, loses her job and her boyfriend on the same day. After some reflection, she realizes she didn't like her job all that much, and that she is unhappy with her excess weight and lack of friends. After a short stint of job interviews, Corinna has a revelation that she would be happier as a small business owner, and gets to work getting a government grant to start a company that provides household services for busy, executive men.

As one might expect, Corinna is lucky enough to get a grant, a loan, and unemployment to start her small company. Somewhat unexpectedly, her primary helper is a punk lesbian from Corinna's former job and the first employee of the company is a friend of Corinna's grandmother. A nasty, flu-like cold is almost a character in itself, as once Corinna catches the cold, her decision making abilities take a strong turn for the worse. This leads Corinna into an awkward encounter with a dead man, which is the "mystery" part of the story. However, Corinna is never actually frightened of the corpse, just frustrated and stressed, so the mystery is really more of a case of hijinks than a crime.

As in most stories of this type, Corinna overcomes challenges and obstacles to win success, lose and win back her friends, and decides that she doesn't really like her former boyfriend all that much, but is unexpectedly drawn to someone new. Dust Angel is a light and charming story--a nice book for an afternoon of escapism. There is a deft, light touch through most of the book which nicely smooths that this is a translation from German. I hope that Dust Angel gets some exposure in the US, I believe it deserves a place on the 2013 list of "beach reads."

Corinna Leyendecker loses her job in advertising, and after many horrific job interviews decides to start her own business: a comprehensive house cleaning and maintenance service called Dust Angel. It so happens she has fine blonde hair like an angel, but her height (5'11") and her weight hardly suggest the diaphanous proportions of a heavenly visitant. Nonetheless this is the start of a great business plan - and a hilarious adventure, or rather misadventure.

Jutta Profijt is the author of a series of books about a ghost who haunts the coroner who did his postmortem. I loved those peculiar mysteries for their oddity and wit. Dust Angel is written in the same witty style and with similiar offbeat humor. But it's not a mystery, despite the presence of a dead body in the plot, but rather a kind of lifestyle comedy.

The truth is, I don't really know how to categorize Dust Angel, but I had great fun reading it.

I loved the satiric commentary on the hip denizens of ad agencies (I've been a copywriter, and Profijt describes the scene perfectly ). Another hilarious bit of satire focuses on a seminar that teaches would-be entrepreneurs how to dress for success. Here Corinna learns to her amazement that dusty rose is her best color and that despite her height she will have to start wearing high heels. The coach's disparaging remarks about Corinna and everyone else in the seminar are pretty funny.

Corinna has her romantic troubles, of course. It's not easy to be thirty-one, have big hips, and lose your boyfriend to an elfin hottie.

But this is a very upbeat novel, despite the agonies of anxiety, stress and downright terror Corinna has to go through before things look up. If here's hope for Corinna, there's hope for us all.

This is a story about a woman who loses both her job and her boyfriend in the same day. After bombing several job interviews, she decides to start her own housecleaning business that is aimed at wealthy bachelors. After work one day, she realizes that she left a door unlocked so she returns to her client's home to lock the door and she finds the dead body of a homeless man in the cooler. Thinking that the man snuck into the home because of the unlocked door, she puts the body in the trunk of her car to dispose of it before her client finds out and her new business falls apart. The writing is good, but the story is just ok. It contains a lot of chick lit clichés such as a break-up, significant weight loss and an ex-boyfriend who is suddenly interested again after fabulous makeover. For me these types of stories are played out, but I was drawn to this book because of the mystery surrounding the dead man, but in the end the conclusion of the mystery was anti-climatic. And the amount of time she spent driving around with the body in the trunk of her car dragged on for far too long. This book would be a good choice for the beach or a plane ride, but not so interesting that I was rushing to read where I had left off.

Corinna loses her job, starts her own business, things go awry, hilarity and hijinks ensue, everything gets sorted, all the loose ends are tied up. That's basically what happens in this book except the hilarity isn't that hilarious or interesting. I did like that it took place in Germany, that made it more interesting, but after a while I wasn't that interested in what would happen next and only kept reading because it's a light read (think airplane or beach) and I knew it wouldn't take too long. I started out liking the book and was waiting for it to pick up speed and take off, but it never really did. After all problems get sorted out, there is a brief bit that mostly wraps up the loose ends...it felt like a very cheaty way to do that, like the author couldn't be bothered to work those details into the main story. I really thought I would like this book but in the end it was just...meh.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Easy Read, But Where's the Mystery? 9. Juni 2013
Von Michelle Howegietzen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I enjoyed this book, but it is barely a mystery. It can only be called that in the briefest sense because a body is missing for a short while. Don't expect it to be a "who dun it?". We always know who found the body, hid the body, found the body again, and brought it back. Enough said.
