Kurzbeschreibung

November 1991
Over the past thousand years, the bloodiest game of the king-of-the-hill has been for supremacy on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the site of the ancient Temple of Solomon. This book recounts the stirring saga of the Knights Templar, the Christian warrior-monks who occupied the sacred Mount in the aftermath of the butchery of the First Crusade. Recruited to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience intended to lead only to martyrdom on the battlefield, they were totally dedicated to the pious paradox that the wholesale slaughter of non-believers would earn the eternal gratitude of the Prince of Peace. The Templars amassed great wealth, which they used to finance their two hundred years of war against Muslims on the desert, in the mountains, and up the broad sweep of the Nile valley. The Templars' reward for those two centuries of military martyrdom was to be arrested by pope and king, tortured by the Inquisition, and finally decreed out of existence. But their legend and legacy just would not die. In telling the incredible story of the Knights Templar, the author's clear explanation of the cultural and religious differences among the Templars' enemies and friends in the Middle East gives fresh understanding of the people who populate this restless region. Here are the Sunnies and the Shiites, the Kurds and Armenians, the Arabs and Turks, who figure so prominently in today's headlines. The similarity of their antagonisms today and those of eight hundred years ago are often so striking as to be eerie. Dungeon, Fire & Sword is a brilliant work of narrative history that can be read as an adventure story, a morality play, or a lesson in the politics of warfare.

Long on enthusiasm and colorful narrative... it is high adventure. The New York Times Book Review Just how deep ancient rivalries and hatreds run in the Middle East can be gleaned from this dramatic, gripping history of the Knights Templar... Rich in human incident... This is high adventure of the first rank. Publishers Weekly, (Starred Review) Robinson's account of one of the medieval world's most famous military orders serves as a reminder that history can be more enthralling than even the most imaginative fiction. Booklist, (Starred Review) Dungeon, Fire and Sword is a good book for all who enjoy a well-written, well-researched story of stupidity, greed, barbarity, unspeakable cruelty, deception, fraud, treachery and sanctimony... John J. Robinson has written a fascinating history of an incredible time. The Washington Times

Synopsis

Over the last 1000 years the bloodiest game of king-of-the-hill has been for supremacy on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. This book recounts the stirring saga of the Knights Templar, the Christian warrior-monks who occupied the sacred Mount in the aftermath of the butchery of the First Crusade. Recruited to a life intended to lead only to martyrdom, they were totally dedicated to the pious paradox that the wholesale slaughter of non-believers would earn the eternal gratitude of the Prince of Peace. The Templars amassed great wealth, which they used to finance their 200 years of war against Moslems on the desert battlefields. The Templar's reward for those two centuries of military martyrdom was to be arrested by Pope and King, tortured and finally decreed out of existence. But their legend and legacy just would not die. In telling the incredible story of the Knights Templar, the author's clear explanation of the cultural and religious differences among the Templars' enemies and friends in the Middle East gives fresh understanding of why people who hated each other 900 years ago still do so today.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fascinating and illuminating book 15. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It provides a detailed history of all the Crusades as well as the Templar's part in each of them. What I found most interesting in the book were all the political details. It becomes apparent at many points that if the Christian invaders of the Middle East had been organized together rather than engaging in constant infighting they would have been able to hold onto their teritory much longer.
Another nice feature of the book is the amount of time spent on the original inhabitants of the Middle East and later in the book on the Mongol invaders. The author does not evince any sort of bias and treat each group equally in his assessment, pointing out both their honorable and despicable deeds.
I would reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in history, warfare, or secret societies, although the secret society aspect it downplayed here.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Captivating and Exciting Literature ! 24. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I absolutely could not put this book down! I'd read Robinson's "Born in Blood" a few times and was craving more.... Then, I found "Dungeon, Fire and Sword" at a local bookstore (before my girlfriend introduced me to Amazon.com). I Devoured the book. I could not stop reading, but I did not want it to end. When I finished the book, I wanted MORE John J. Robinson and--luckily--my girlfriend had purchased "A Pilgrim's Path" for me, via Amazon.com....it came in the mail, as a surprise! I finished that one in two sittings..... John J Robinson is an excellent writer. I admire him, greatly.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Captivating Reading for All Knight Templar Fans 5. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
John Robinson, a scholar with indubitable academic reputation assumes the intricate task to reveal the story of The Knights Templar, throughout their 150 years of official history. No speculations are made regarding their inclination to occultism or adulation of dark forces, instead, Robinson follows a more logical path when arguing that the dissolution of the Templar Order was dictated merely by economic interests, greed, and envy. The vivid description of the wars fought in the Holly Land and the monstrosities of medieval torture techniques many of the Knights had to endure, poses serious questions about the human nature.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fascinating 5. Mai 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
If you love history, this is one of those, "Couldn't put it down books." It is chock full of information. Although not in a true Novel form, Robinson does make the facts flow in a very good story fashion. I will be buying his other works.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Incredible Story! 3. Februar 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book was well recommended by the other readers in this column. It is the saga of the Knights Templar, and their role in the crusades to restore christianity in the Holy Land. Ripe with facts that gets brutal at times, yet enlightening. This book shows the treachery of popes and nobles, to the gallant knights who vowed to give their lives to the order. All in all, a fascinating journey back in time to a place where honor reigned supreme among most men. And, Kings, clergy, and layman would fight to the end for their beliefs.

2.0 von 5 Sternen rambling but interesting 19. Januar 2000
Von J. Weber
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I was very interested in the topic when it first started out but midway through the book I felt bogged down with information. While reading the book I got the impression that the author included every shred of information he gleaned in research without regard to its pertinence. the book regained an interesting pace around the 30th chapter, however.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Simply brilliant. 16. Dezember 1999
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Reads like a novel. (I know, not a particularly original thing to say, but it's true). Would make a great multi-part graphic novel or television mini-series. It's too big for one film, unless one tried a six-part George Lucas thing. Buy it. Now.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Incorrect history 22. November 1999
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Dungeon, Fire and Sword is an excellent read, especially if you want a deeper knowledge of how and why in the crusader years. Unfortuantly the author fancy himself more of a writer than a historian and therefore sometimes transform events into being, perhaps not totally in response to the historical facts. But if you already know a bit about history, you can sort this out, and then you have a well written, very informative book on a sometimes dry subject. I learned alot, but from what I already know, I also know enough to know that what I learned may not be entirely correct. But a good read non the less.
