Dungda de Islan' is the story of our voyage to the Caribbean, as well as our experiences during our first year in the islands. It's a tale of how we fell in love with this part of the world, to the extent that, after 7 years, we're still here and have no immediate plans to leave. Dungda de Islan' has elements of a travelogue, a sea story, and the evolution of our relationship with each other, the boat, and the wonderful people of the island nations of the Caribbean. The title is patois, and it translates roughly to Down in the Islands.

It's been a lot of fun to go back and resurrect the experiences, which, like mangoes ripening in the sun, have grown richer with the passing of time. If you've wondered what it would be like to chuck it all and go sailing, this book will give you a good idea. From the lonely splendor of a two-week, two person ocean voyage, to the delight of finding out of the way corners where people are in tune with the elemental joy of simply living, you can cruise along with us.

5.0 von 5 Sternen What Every Sailor Wants 10. Dezember 2011
Von David - Veröffentlicht auf
What most sailors want is a partner that loves to sail and wants to be on the water. This story is full of sailing adventures and of the life of two special people living the dream sailing the caribbean on their beloved sailboat. As the author said it is not a life for everyone, but who doesn't dream of the day when they can awake to the sweet music of the sail. Anyone interested in savoring the good things in life, wanting to know the ins and outs of daily sailing with a partner will enjoy this read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I'm Craving a Baguette 14. März 2012

Dungda de Islan' translates to "down to the Islands" and that is exactly where this delightful book will transport you. If travel to you means a car tour through a city this book will make you rethink your ldeas.

Join Charles and Leslie on their 35 foot sailing vessel, Play Actor, as they explore the sailing life in the islands of the Caribbean in a way most of us can only dream. In the process you will enter a rich culture.

One of my favorite lines from the book best sums up the island culture, "People work hard, but most of them work to live, not for abstractions, and they seem to have a concept of "enough" without the compulsion that our society at home has for "more".

Each island has unique charm and challenges. I loved Bequia and learned a new side of Saint Martin. On some islands, locals bring fresh hot bread to your boat and pick up your laundry.

One word of warning, if you are counting calories, traveling with Charles and Leslie on the Play Actor to Dungda de Islan' will make you crave a baguette and some French pastries.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A lesson in living life to the fullest 25. November 2012
Von Mary Gottschalk - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
What a lovely walk down memory lane, in no small measure because of Bud's terrifically visual place and scene descriptions of Caribbean islands, many of which I last visited forty years ago. Some I recognized immediately, and was thrilled at their timelessness. Others have changed dramatically, some for the better, some for the worse. But I could see each and every one.

But what resonated most with me was his transition from a visitor checking off names on an itinerary to a yacht-based "citizen" of the Caribbean, as he discovered the joy of "moving from place to place in harmony with the rhythm of nature" and living in a world where people are happy with "enough" and aren't constantly striving for more.

Even if you've never cruised the Caribbean, even if you've never set foot on a sailboat, his story offers some wonderful lessons in living life to the fullest.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A delightful book 25. August 2012
Von Terry Tyler, author - Veröffentlicht auf
Tales from Charles and Leslie Dougherty's journeys around the islands of the Caribbean. I loved this book! It's charming, funny, interesting, thought provoking, informative. It made me feel as if I was there with them, and made me want to be so even more! There's a trailer for Charles' books on youtube; seeing the pictures of some of the places he and Leslie have been to made the book come alive even more. I don't know anything about sailing, but even the quite technical boat-type bits were interesting, too! I loved reading all about the islanders; Charles has a knack of making just ordinary day to day activity read so well - reminded me a bit of the way Bill Bryson does so. Highly recommended.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Reads like poetry 21. Mai 2012
Von Coach Tabby - Veröffentlicht auf

Charles Dougherty's "Dungda de Islan'" is a work of art that reads like poetry. The book is an easy and pleasing read; the reader finds himself/herself drifting along on an ocean of beautiful clauses, phrases, and words. Mr. Dougherty's writing moves the reader to and fro on the ebbing and flowing in this diary based on his adventures at sea, as well as meeting the most beautiful and wonderful Islanders along the way. This book has everything: comedic situations, happiness, and a feeling completeness. Great book and well worth the read. Let yourself drift along with the ocean's spray and wind against your face and give Mr. Dougherty a chance to show you what life can be like when you take a chance and live it like it is supposed to be lived.
